Warnings - mentions of sex previously had, mentions of torture, talk of drugging someone

"Timothée, what the fuck was that?" I asked, pure confusion in my tone.

"It was nothing," he said.

"Are you cheating on me?" I demanded.

"What, no, of course not," he said, and he looked relieved I'd thought it was that.

"Did you drug me or something? What was that whole bit about the cigarettes?"

"No, baby," he tried to approach me, but I backed away.

"You never learn, do you brother?" I heard a dark voice speak. Out of the shadows came....Timothée? Well, it looked exactly like him. There were only minor differences. This boy didn't have the spattering of freckles, his curls were slightly darker, and slicked back, and his eyes were a blood-red color.

"Luce, why are you here," Timothée looked terrified.

"You told Enzo to send one of his lackeys, I guess I qualify as that. Plus, they knew I was probably the only person who adequately keep you in line."

"You need to go, now," Timothée said, and I saw him inching his way in front of me.

"Father grows weary Tim O Tay," Luce said in a sing-song voice. "This all could have been over with so fast, drug her, suck her, report back."

"You know I don't do things the way you and father do," Timothée spat.

"I know," barked Luce. "That is why I ask myself every day why you were born with the blood star and I was not!"

"What in the world is happening," I interrupted, everything they were saying was going completely over my head.

"Hello dear," Luce waved his long fingers. They were decked out in rings.

"Who are you?"

"What, your darling boyfriend didn't tell you he had a brother, a twin no less?"

"I guessed that, I more meant what are you talking about?"

"Wouldn't you like to know?" Luce beamed cruelly. Suddenly, he was lunging forward and grabbing my arm in a vice-like grip. In a flash, we were somewhere else entirely.

This place looked medieval. No natural light, just candles everywhere. Everything had a very Victorian gothic feel, not to mention it was all either red or black.

"Where am I?" I asked.

"The House of Night, my dear," Luce said, and then Timothée appeared out of purple smoke.

"Ah, I thought you might be joining us," Luce said.

"Unhand her!" Timothée roared.

"This is a bad dream," I murmured to myself. "This is all a bad dream."

Again, Luce moved like lightning. Soon, Timothée and I had been chained together. Timothée's face had gone green.

"That should help this go more smoothly. Now I think I shall put you in the dungeon until father gives his next orders."

Timothée and I were unceremoniously ushered down a steep flight of stairs. Soon, we were pushed into the hard floor of the cell. The door slammed shut before we could even try to move.

"Oh my head," Timothée moaned.

"You have five seconds to tell me what's going on!" I snapped at him.

"It'll take more than five," he groaned. "But first, come here, I want to see if you're hurt."

"I'm not coming any closer to you than I have to. It's clear you've done nothing but lie to me."

"Look, it isn't my fault okay."

"Start talking," I snapped.

"Okay so first off, Vampires exist."

"Be serious Timothée!"

"I am! Didn't you see how we traveled here? Plus, okay," he opened his mouth. As if coming from a secret compartment, fangs slotted down over his teeth.

"See?"

"Holy fuck," I said, falling to the ground in disbelief.

"Also witches, and werewolves," he added. "We all kinda hate each other but know about each other. There are three houses of power. The House of Night is for the vampires, House of Fangs, for the werewolves, and the House of Force for the Witches."

"So you, you're from the House of Night?"

"More than that, the Chalamets are the biggest names in the House of Night. We run everything. Birch is actually from the House of Force, that's why he kept telling you to watch out for me, my family has quite the reputation."

"This is all so insane. But what does this all have to do with me, and what was that star thing your brother mentioned?"

"A vampire can be born with a mark called a Blood Star," Timothée said and pulled down his shirt. There was a perfect star, that stood scarlet red against his pale skin.

"I didn't see that on you when we had-" I cut myself off, not wanting to remember what I'd done with him.

"I glamored it, all the houses have the ability to glamor themselves. Birch actually has two horns coming from his head," Timothée explained.

"Anyway, the Blood Star is a mark that means a vampire has been blessed by the universe. It means they'll be harder to kill, most things will come more naturally to them, and they won't need the blood of humans to be powerful. This means they live longer because they're less likely to be hunted."

"And you have it, and he doesn't?" I asked.

"Yes, and he's always been jealous. I have never liked our lifestyle. I want to live as normally as I can. I don't like hurting people and that's all my family does. Picture the mob, well that's kind of what my family is for the House of Night. My dad has wanted me to do more training and get involved for years, but I've managed to get out of it. Luce loves it, he adores hurting people."

"Again, what about me?" I demanded.

"I'm getting to it, trust me, you need this background. The Witches hold all the prophecies every witch has ever made. A couple of months ago, Luce and some of his friends, ran a raid on the Witch catacombs. They found a prophecy about a wildly talented girl fitting your description. My dad knows I have more charm, stealth, and persuasion than my brother. He told me if I found you, and figured out what you were, he'd let me live whatever kind of life I wanted. I was supposed to find out what house you belonged to, and obviously, my father was hoping it was Night, and then torture you for details if you weren't."

"The cigarettes," I said in awe. "The weird questions."

"Those cigarettes are made from crushed sun root, smoking them lets me walk in the sun with minimal pain. However, it's still easier to move at night. They made you sick so I knew you weren't a vampire."

"So why?" I asked.

"Why what?"

"Why am I not missing fingers and toes, why am I in one piece? I'm not in the House of Night, and you were supposed to torture me. Why didn't you?"

"Because I fell for you, really, really, hard."
