Indy took the ropes and climbing gear from the saddle. He paused to lay his hand on Annie's head.

She looked up at him, terrified, then clutched him.

Indy looked at Marion for help.

Marion thanked the small Egyptian boy, Farouk and stood. She looked in command - and Indy needed to see that. He loved seeing that. Courage in a cannonball brunette. His cannonball brunette wife.

"Once we get to the top, take the horse, go back to the tent, and get our medical gear. Ok, Annie?" Marion instructed, handing Indy a climbing pack. He shouldered it on. Then knelt to Annie's level.

"Annie, darling treasure - you are doing a really good job," Indy smiled, hugging her.

She hugged him, crying.

Indy gently pushed her away and wiped her tears with the back of his hand. "This is hard, hon. I know you're scared. No matter what happens, I love you. So does your mother."

"What about Em? Is she going to be mad at me?" Annie hung onto the patient horse's head like most children did with teddy bears.

"No, hon." Marion knelt and hugged Annie. "Em is... Em is not going to be angry at you."

"I... I just left her there! I'm the older sister! I'm supposed to watch out for her!"

"Annie - you're ten," Indy soothed. "Ten- year-olds can't control cliffs."

"You didn't leave Em there," Marion replied, trying to be soothing but the tone wasn't reaching her words. She swung a climbing pack on, trying to stay busy instead of exploding in fury at a child who didn't deserve it.

"You came to get us," Indy finished, securing his climbing harness. "And we're gonna get Em. We'd do the same thing for you, Annie."

"Promise you won't be mad?"

"We're not mad," Marion answered, securing the ropes of her climbing harness.

"We're happy to come get you," Indy smiled, kissing Annie on the forehead. He stood, taking Marion's hands. "Ready, hon? Partners, remember?"

Marion glared at the rock, eyeing the the ancient footholds. "Once I get to the top, I'll find something to secure your ropes on."

"Right," Indy replied. "Marion - let me check your harness and the knots."

She stood impatiently still, watching Indy's shaking hands attempt to make her knots more secure than her fury already had.

"Thanks, Marion," He murmured, touching her face and securing her hat. She turned her head slightly and bumped his hand.

Indy stepped away, not saying a word. They didn't have to.

"On belay!" Marion called, her hands clutching the ancient climbing holds.

"Belay on," Indy replied, bracing himself as Marion started to climb.
