I can't forget

"Lucy what's wrong?"

Lucy swallowed hard. "Nothing." She replied, her voice a whisper.

Peter sat down beside her. "Well it's certainly not nothing." He pointed out. "You've been quiet all day, after - after talking with Susan this morning."

Lucy hesitated. "It's silly really." She told him.

Peter raised an eyebrow. "I'll be the judge of that." He announced.

Lucy sighed, before shaking her head. "I - I can't forget." She choked. "I can't forget like Susan did."

Peter frowned. "You won't Lu." He breathed. "Why on earth would you think that?"

"Susan just completely forgot!" Lucy cried. "How could she just forget like that, after everything? I refuse - I won't be like her. I won't become what she's become, I won't grow up! And - and that's hard because the world keeps telling me I have to grow up, Susan keeps telling me I have to grow up, but I won't Peter, I can't."

"Hey, hey calm down." Peter said gently, taking hold of her shoulders to steady her. "You are probably the one of us least likely to ever fall away from Narnia okay? Don't listen to anyone when they tell you to grow up, you are grown up, you know more about being an adult than any of your friends or people your age ever will, and that I can say with the utmost certainty."

Lucy stared at him for a moment. "Their idea of a grown up is a lot different to our idea." She muttered.

"Lucy, you ruled a Kingdom for 15 years." Peter said with a gentle smile. "I don't think any of them ever have."

Lucy smiled back for a moment, before the smile dropped. "Susan has." She whispered.

Peter sighed. "I know," He breathed, trying hard to think of something to say. "But we'll keep working on her, yeah? She can't be gone, not yet."
