You'll never be alone

"Hey, hey look at me buddy."
Edmund blinked harshly to try and keep back his tears, looking up at his Dad.
"I'll be back before you know it." His Dad told him, his voice gently. "Besides, you'll never be alone yeah? You've got your Mum, and your sisters. You've got Peter, he won't leave you."
Edmund smiled weakly, but the tears were still dripping down his cheeks.
"You're going to be just fine." His Dad whispered.
"I'm not worried about me." Edmund choked out. "What about you?"
His Dad forced a smile. "I'm going to be fine." He said as firmly as he could. "Just try not to worry okay? Don't spend your days worrying about me, have fun yeah?"
Edmund hesitated, but found himself nodding in the end, leaning forward and wrapping his arms around his Dad's neck. "Please be careful." He murmured, clinging on tight.
His Dad hugged him back softly, placing a hand on the top of his head and smoothing down his hair. "Of course I'll be careful." He said with a weak chuckle. "I'm always careful."
Edmund didn't seem too convinced, but he didn't say anything and just held on even tighter.
"I'll be home soon Eddy," His Dad whispered. "I promise."
