I'm back!!

No ships

Evan walked to the oak tree park and sighed. He knew he fucked up. Big time. Half of everyone he knew hated him.

He knew he was doing the wrong thing the whole time. All the lies he told rolled off of his tongue. They were all just things he wanted- a good friend, a trusting companion, and a welcoming embrace.

Other than his mom, of course.

Evan walked to the infamous tree and stood there, hands clutching his paper in hand.

This was the tree where he supposedly spent a good time with Connor.
This was the tree where Evan used to eat with his dad and mom when he was 3.

This was the tree where he just let go.

Evan shakily cleared his throat and unrolled the paper and spoke.

"Dear Evan Hansen, today's going to be a good day, and here's why."

He seemed to be at a loss for words. Even though all the words he was going to say were right there in front of him, he couldn't do it. It was too much.

But he had to.

Breathe.

"Dear Evan Hansen, today's going to be a good day, and here's why- because today, today you're cleaning things up. No more lies."

Evan chuckled. If only his therapist could see him now.

"Connor, in reality, was nothing to me. He was merely only the brother of my crush, and the kid that no one wanted to talk to. The day he spoke to me, he shoved me. The day I truly met him, he stole my letter. All Connor did was be a sufficient asshole and creep.

"But even assholes and creeps have backgrounds. His- I don't really know. Zoe never explained it. His parents didn't either. But I know I shouldn't have made up all those lies.

"I felt like all of those lies turned into a chain holding my ankle with a weight ball. I was trapped- and for some reason, even though more people talked to me, I was more and more alone. No one was there for me- they were there for Connor."

Evan got closer to the tree and placed his hand where Connor's initials were carved into.

"Connor Murphy, I am so sorry. For messing with you, and for messing with your family. I know that it wasn't the right thing to do. If I could take it back, I would in an instant. But all I wanted you to see was that you're not alone."

Evan took his hand back and rubbed it with his over hand. For some reason, it felt warmer, as if someone was holding it, telling him 'it's okay'.

Evan placed the letter below the tree and covered it with some flowers he plucked out of the grass.

"I'm sorry."

He walked back towards the parking lot and stepped into the green Jeep, closing the door and sitting there in the passenger's seat.

"How'd it go?" Zoe softly asked from the back.

"I did it."

Jared, from the driving seat, put his hand on his shoulder. "We're proud of you, man."

And so was Evan.

And so was Connor.
