Hunter P.O.V
I glance at Alpha James, wondering when this meeting will be over. According to my watch, it should be ending in about ten minutes.
"Nicholas" Alpha James called my father's name. "How did the pack react to the treaty?" Alpha James asked. My father sighed.
"With the results Hunter and I got, we should be looking forward to a war soon" My father answered. Alpha James nodded, his stern face not showing any worry.
How was he not worried?
"Then we'll fight, this isn't the first war we have fought" Alpha James turned his attention to Landon, the Gamma of the pack.
"If we do fight, Landon. I expect a lot out of you, I want to see what you can do on the battlefield" Alpha James states. Landon nods and crosses his arms, the serious expression on his face never faltering.
"And you, Hunter. Your going to be my Beta very soon, I expect a lot out of you too. I want to see how you have improved over the years" Alpha James instructed. I nodded respectively, my father smiled at me in approval to my behavior.
"We have to start training the men, Alpha. This pack isn't infirm" My father informs. All of the men nod, including me, sizing up our competition in our minds. Alpha James leans forward in his chair, as if deciding what we will do.
"Then we'll train them. Our leading females of the pack, like always, will stay behind to make sure the women and children are protected" Alpha James opts. Leading females as in, the Alpha female and Beta female. But, since we have a Gamma now, maybe the Gamma female will do the job also.
"Leading females as in...?" Landon drags out. Alpha James cracks a smile through his cold demeanor.
"If Lilac doesn't feel up to the job then she doesn't have to guard" Landon nods and looks down, mulling over his choices. Alpha James turns to my father once again,
"How long our we looking at to prepare for this war? Are you even sure the Alpha declared war?" Alpha James questioned. My father nodded with a dramatic sigh.
"He clearly said he would fight for his land and control of his pack" My father confirmed. "And with that threat, we're looking at about six months?" He estimated. Finally, worry crossed Alpha James's face, he stood up and paced in front of the table.
"Then we all have to contribute to the training of the pack men" Alpha James said, he then checked his watch with a nod. "You guys can leave, we'll discuss this more tomorrow. And please don't tell your mates about this conversation" Alpha James ordered.
"We don't want them freaking out, and some of our mates really don't need the extra stress" Alpha James glanced at Landon who nodded. Alpha James then walked to his desk, while in the process, he mind-linked his mate.
A few moments later, the Alpha and Gamma female showed up. A delightful scent filled my nose... Strawberries and Vanilla? I looked up slowly, my eyes focusing on the flawless skinned beauty in front of the Gamma.
My wolf instantly purred, my eyes raked over her beautiful body. Her dark brown hair was in subtle curls and framed her face perfectly, her skin glowed magnificently. Then, suddenly, my heart stopped and dropped into a permanent abyss.
Her large, swollen belly was teeming with a child. Her hair was flipped over her back, her mark was shown overtly into the open with pride, making her mate's claim obvious. Making the Gamma's claim obvious.
My heart broke into a million pieces when I noticed that the pack wasn't the only one fighting a war, I was now fighting a war that I had no upper-hand in. A war that I was never going to win. A war that was going to kill me slowly until my wolf takes control of me fully.
I turned to my father quick. "Father, we have a huge problem!" I whisper frantically. My father glances at me, worry bubbling up in his eyes. He nods for me to continue.
"The Gamma's mate is my... Mate" I say nervously. My father glances at the couple who is whispering to each other, he shakes his head in disbelief.
"Not possible" He says. I blow out a sigh and nod. My father curses under his breath before turning to me, dread filling his face.
"You have to have some sort of bond with your mate to become Beta"
I resist the urge to growl. This is messing up my plans for life, and my plans to also achieve anything I want in life. I wanted mate and a family to love and protect. But the Gamma gets what was suppose to be mine.
Worst way to return from a trip
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Gamma Landon place his hands on "His" mates large belly, worry etching over his face. I couldn't help but worry if something was wrong with her.
'Her? Her name is Lilac' He growls defensively. How did he know that and I didn't?
I glance at Lilac once again, noticing that she won't feel the bond or even guess at it unless I'm close to her or I tell her. My wolf spoke up once again, determination threading throughout his words.
'We will fight for her eventually' He said. I glanced at the beautiful woman that was suppose to be my mate and nod with a sigh. I'll fight for her, but right now, I need to let off some steam.
I need to drink my problems away. I need to take my anger out on rouges, killing off rouges helps me cool off. And that is exactly what I needed. I needed to cool off.
I needed to fight for my mate...
