"y/n?" richie asks, speeding up his pace to catch up to your side, "you know what i've noticed?"
you took a bite off your chocolate bar and turned your head to look at him, "whats's up richie?"
"we'd make such a cute couple." richie grinned and nudged your arm.
you let out a sigh and giggled, "oh richie."
you jog off to catch up with bill and eddie, leaving richie behind who was calling after you.
"l-let m-me gu-guess, h-he s-said y-you and h-him w-wo-would m-make a g-good c-couple?" bill asked, keeping his gaze in front of him.
"yes he did." you reply back, taking another bite off your chocolate.
"poor guy, doesn't know when to stop." eddie shook his head, his lips in a line.
you look back at richie who was talking to stan and ben and before he could catch you staring, you turned your head back forward, and keep your eyes on the clouds above.
"yeah."
richie was so head over heels over you that it seemed kind of pathetic to the rest of the group. you thought so too but, it was kind of sweet? you still didn't know your final thoughts on it.
"she's never going to like you back, richie." stan blatantly said, kicking a pebble.
"shut up stan, you can't even get a girlfriend. i heard you just tickle that pickle at home." richie retorted.
"at least when i do, she'll like- hey y/n!" stan didn't finish his sentence when he saw you approaching him and richie.
"hey stanley," you smiled and you turned towards richie, "hey to you too, richie."
"so y/n, did it hurt?" richie asked.
"hurt?"
"you know, when you fell from heaven?"
"no but did it hurt when you crawled out of hell?" you shot back and richie grew silent, and you couldn't help but feel triumphant that you silenced the trashmouth.
"are you flirting with me?" richie asked, his voice growing hopeful.
"what? no! how was that flirting!" you protest, your face scrunching up.
"you totally were! stan, right y/n was flirting with me?" richie started to slap stan's shoulder over and over.
"ow ow ow, i don't know! stop hitting me!" stan swatted richie back and you couldn't help but chuckle and roll your eyes.
"whatever. i'm going to go to beverly's. bye dorks." you cut a corner and started to walk faster.
"nice going, stanley!" you hear richie exclaim and you couldn't help but smile.
"you like him, don't you!" beverly squealed after you told her about what happened before you came.
"no! how did you get that from what i told you?" you protest, trying to lower your voice that rose about eight more octaves.
"well for starters, you're turning red." she pointed you, tapping your cheeks and you cupped them with your hands.
"shut up! i don't like richie!" you smile but immediately wiped it off your face. "well..."
"i knew it!" beverly yelled out, putting her fists up in the air.
"yeah yeah, shut up."
"well, are you going to say anything?" she asked, meeting your eyes.
"i don't know. i just started returning his feelings and i don't want to say anything. plus, i don't like sharing my feelings and i don't even know why i'm telling you!" you sighed.
"well, you need to tell him soon because a boy can only take so much rejection." beverly placed her hand on your knee and you looked at it, not wanting to look up.
"maybe."
"that's my girl!"
for the next week, you've been trying to hang out with richie more but he would usually be gone from the group. it was weird but you were always hopeful.
"where's richie?" you ask, resting your arm on eddie's head.
"i th-think h-he's w-with a-allison r-rein. y-you kn-know, th-that g-girl fr-from s-second p-period?" bill answers, poking the ground with his newfound stick.
"oh."
"you okay, y/n?" mike asked, cocking his head to look at you.
"yeah, just wondering." you smile, trying to hide the fact that millions of thoughts were racing through your mind. allison reid was a beautiful and sweet girl and you can see why richie would take an interest in her. she probably feels flattered that a boy like richie likes her. no matter how much of an ass he is.
"she probably just misses his pathetic flirts, am i right, y/n?" eddie laughs and you chuckle halfheartedly with the group.
"yeah."
for the next couple of weeks, you slowly distance yourself from richie and the group. you didn't want to raise concern among them and you always had the 'i-need-to-help-my-mom' excuse handy.
richie brought allison along a few times and during those times, you had to force a smile on your face. allison wasn't the problem, it was you and your stupid feelings. but finally, you got away with seeing your friends twice or thrice a week.
currently, you were walking around the park, letting the wind blow against your face. you take in the smell of the grass and the sound of the leaves brushing against other leaves.
"hey y/n!" you hear a voice call and you looked around and saw the last ever person you wanted to see.
"oh, hey richie." you cracked a small smile as he ran up to you.
"where the fuck have you been? i haven't seen you in forever!" he grins his usual shit-eating grin and it took all your might to not grin back.
"oh you know, just at home." you gulped.
"oh that's too bad! i've missed your pretty face!" he bumps you and you had to stay looking forward so he wouldn't catch you blushing.
"well, it's not like you can't find another one." you grumble, picking at your thigh again.
"what's that supposed to mean?" richie stopped but you kept walking, wanting to get away.
"nothing. i gotta go richie, i have to help my mom." you lie again.
"you've said that five times this week, you liar!" richie exclaims but you still keep walking. "y/n!"
richie pulls you back and makes you face him. you can't bring yourself to look at him because you were burning with embarrassment.
"what do you mean?" he asks, his voice lowering.
"i said nothing, okay? go with allison or something." you sass, finally meeting with his gaze.
"allison? what the fuck does that gotta do with this?" he argued, his eyebrows furrowing together.
"you obviously hang out with her a lot, so go with her!" you throw your hands around, not knowing what to do anymore.
"you sound like you're a jealous girlfriend! it's not like you like me!"
you stay silent, picking at the red spot on your thigh. richie gasped, causing you to look at him again.
"you like me, don't you?" richie inquired. "do you?"
"yes." you admit, your eyes softening.
"no! i pined over you for more than two years already! two fucking years! you can't just return my damn feelings when i finally find a girl that may like me back!" he shouts and it just riled you right up.
"well i told you to fucking go, didn't i?" you snapped back, pointing your finger to the streets.
"i can't! you know why?" he yelled.
"enlighten me, trashmouth."
"because you own my fucking heart." richie's voice returned back to normal. you calmed down and felt absolutely speechless.
"what about allison, then?" you ask, being the devil's advocate.
"she's nothing compared to you! she's too peppy and nice, ew." he grimaced and you laugh, your heart fluttering.
"so, how bout you and me go to the quarry and have a little date?" he asks, butterflies in his stomach.
your heart almost leapt out of your chest, "let's do it."
"fuck yeah bitches! i got y/n l/n to say yes!"
