Thomas and Laf both looked at the ground. Alex let his foot tap impatiently as he waited for an answer. As time stretched on, he grew irritable. "Well? What the hell were the two of you doing?"
Laf looked up at his best friend and saw the stony look on his face and shut his mouth again. Thomas scoffed, glaring into Alex's eyes.
"Why the hell do I owe you an explanation? I'd explain to Herc why I was beating up his perfect boyfriend, but not you. You have nothing to do with this, I owe you nothing and I don't care about you," he spat.
Alex flinched slightly at Thomas's words. "Fine. If that's how you feel then that's just fine. Nobody is going to make you care about me. But Laf is one of my best friends and I'd like to know what he did to deserve that battering," Alex said, trying to conceal his pain at his crush's words.
Thomas's eyes widened as he thought back to his words. He hadn't meant to say that he didn't care about Alex because he did. He more than cared about Alex. He loved him, he just didn't know how to express his feelings.
Thomas opened his mouth to speak, only to find that the only sound able to come out of his mouth was a choked sob. He was vaguely aware of someone's arms around him and soothing noises.
Alex watched as Laf wrapped his arms around his cousin, glaring at Alex as they slid to the ground. He frowned at Laf's glare. "What? I just told him the truth and it wasn't mean. For once."
Laf just continued to glare at him as Thomas cried in his arms.
Thomas heard the distinctly French voice above him say, "Alex apologise." This made him cry harder because Alex didn't need to apologise, he did.
"No," he sobbed. "Don't apologise Alex. I'm the one who needs to say sorry." There was a silence until he heard Alex yelling, presumably at the crowd that had gathered ages ago, to go away.
Then Thomas felt a hand on his cheek. He looked up, sniffing as tears continued streaming down his face. Alex was crouching in front of him, his eyes filled with an immeasurable amount of love.
"Thomas, I was out of order. You were right. You don't owe me anything and I acted like I deserved an explanation. I'm sorry," he said, his other hand coming up to stroke Thomas's cheek.
Thomas sniffed as he leaned into Alex's hand. "I shouldn't have said that I don't care about you. I do, Alex, so much," he said, still crying. "I'm sorry too."
Alex looked at Laf who reluctantly let go of his cousin. Alex immediately pulled Thomas's head into his lap as he sat down. Thomas laughed wetly as his tears stopped.
Alex stroked Thomas's hair gently and blew on his face. James caught sight of Alex and, not seeing Thomas, ran over to him excitedly. "Alex, I managed to busy up everyone's schedules later so that you can be alone with- Oh, hey Thomas," he finished awkwardly.
The moment the words had left James's mouth, Alex shot up and hugged his ex. "Thankyouthankyouthankyou," he said, practically jumping up and down. James laughed.
"It was no problem. I'd do it again if you really wanted me to. I mean, that's what friends are for. Plus, I'm kinda doing it for me too," he admitted. Alex tilted his head to the side.
"Oh, I guess that makes sense. But really, thank you Jamie. I owe you." Alex turned back to Thomas who was sitting on the ground, a frown on his face. "Tom? What's wrong?" Alex asked.
Thomas snapped back to reality. "Huh? Nothing's wrong. Why would you think that something was wrong?"
Alex gave him a concerned look. "Thomas you're frowning," he said, stating the obvious. "That's usually a pretty good sign that something's wrong."
Thomas sighed and turned to James. "SO, what am I doing when Alex is going to be alone with this mystery person?" he asked, forcing a smile onto his face.
Alex rubbed a hand over his face wearily. "Thomas," he started. "Thomas, you'll be with me."
Thomas stared at Alexander for a second, disbelief written all over his face. Laf and Herc (who were still standing in the background) gasped and hurriedly walked away. James awkwardly excused himself to give the pair some space.
Thomas continued to stare at Alex. "What?" he asked, his voice low and confused. "But then you wouldn't be alone with your person."
Alex let out a strange laughing sound, sitting back down next to Thomas. "Yes I would. I'd be with you. And that would be enough," he said honestly. Thomas's eyes widened and he slapped a hand over his mouth.
Alex instantly regretted. "Shit, was that too much? You don't have to feel the same way or anything it's just that, well, I wanted to tell you that I love you Thomas Jefferson. I have for a while and I get that this is a bad time and that you're probably not interested. It's just that-"
Thomas kissed him. Alex kissed him back. In between frantic kisses, Thomas mumbled, "Shut the hell up Alex."
The two sat there in their perfect paradise, taking all that they'd missed since they first met. Alex eventually pulled back, his face flushed and his ponytail slightly askew. "Eliza," he gasped, "Is going to kill me."
Thomas laughed, forcing the younger boy around. He let Alex's hair out so that it hung in a tangled cloud around his shoulder. He fixed his hair with a comb he pulled from his bag, slowly working out tangles so gently that Alex barely felt it.
"How can you do that?" he asked in amazement as Thomas eventually combed through his hair with no problems at all.
Thomas burst out laughing. "Trust me Alexander, my hair gets far more tangled than yours ever could. I've learned virtually every trick to avoid unnecessary pain when brushing my hair," he explained as he pulled Alex's hair back into a flawless ponytail.
When he was done, he pulled out his phone, snapping a quick photo of Alex's hair and showing it to him. Alex looked at the photo and then at Thomas, a grin spreading over his face. Then he jumped into Thomas's arms, hugging him tightly.
"Thank you," he muttered into his shoulder. Thomas wrapped his arms around Alex in return.
"No problem darlin'," he said, doodling patterns casually down Alex's back. "No problem at all." The bell rang, obnoxiously loud, drawing Alex and Thomas out of the other's embrace.
"We should head to class. Can we talk after? At lunch or something? We could grab a sandwich, just the two of us and talk things over. If you want," Thomas asked shyly. Alex smiled and nodded.
"I'd like that," he answered, swooping in to peck Thomas's lips one last time.
