John was sitting with Alex and Thomas, awkwardly third wheeling as he waited for his girlfriend. When Peggy finally left the school building and ran towards him, he felt his heart skip a beat.
"Wow, Pegs, you look... amazing," he breathed, struggling to find words. Peggy giggled and spun around, her new dress flaring out. It was her signature color, yellow, and was closely fitted at the top but was really loose at the bottom.
"Thanks John, my dad had it made for me. You like?" she asked, a small smile on her face. John just nodded, standing up and pulling her into a kiss.
He heard Alex groan from behind him, "Urgh, straight people. They can never control themselves." John flipped him off without turning around, making both Alex and Thomas chuckle.
"We'd love to stay and watch you two heteros make out, but we have a copy of The Little Mermaid with our names on it, so we're gonna head out," Alex said, waving to his best friend, not noticing the little flinch he gave at the mention of the words "you two heteros".
Peggy, however, did pick up on his flinch and filed it away to ask him about later. "Yeah, yeah, go away Lex. Neither of us asked you to stay and watch us 'make out'," she teased.
John chuckled and made a shooing gesture. "Yeah, go away 'Xander," he said. Alex laughed and slung an arm around his Thomas.
"We'll see y'all later," Thomas said, picking Alex up and running away like he had a hostage, Alex squealing like a little girl as he did. John could still hear him screaming for Thomas to put him down long after he lost sight of them.
He chuckled and turned to his girlfriend. "I have a date planned if you're up for it," John said shyly, a soft smile on his lips as he looked at his girlfriend.
Peggy smiled back. "I'd love to go on a date with you," she replied, leaning up and kissing his lips softly.
John took her hand and gently tugged on it. Peggy giggled and skipped behind him as he started walking.
After a while, they got to John's house. Peggy raised an eyebrow at John questioningly. "What are we doing here?" she asked, a little confused.
John didn't answer, instead instructing, "Wait here, I'll be right back." Peggy watched as he walked through his front door.
She couldn't tell what was going on inside the house, but she trusted John enough and waited where she was.
When Peggy felt two hands come over her face and cover her eyes, she let out a screech, whirling around and booting her attacker in the ribs. She heard a familiar cough and looked down to see it was John.
"John, oh my god. You scared me I didn't mean to hurt you! Are you ok? Do we need to go to the ER and get you checked out?" Peggy asked nervously.
John held up a hand as he fought for breath. " 'm just winded Pegs, nothing to worry 'bout," he gasped, still struggling to breathe.
Peggy watched him worriedly. It took a few minutes before John could stand up straight and talk. "Ok, you ready? I asked my mom for her car keys."
"Yeah let's go. Are you sure you're okay?" John just rolled his eyes and kissed the top of her head. Peggy smiled and hugged him. "Where are we even going?" she asked.
"Bold of you to assume we're not just going on a road trip," John teased. "I'm kidding. You'll find out when we get there."
Peggy pouted but hopped into the passenger seat of John's mom's car. "How is your mom?" she asked nervously, not wanting to upset him.
John shrugged. "She has good days and bad days but these days the bad days happen most often. It's okay though. We're all ready for what's coming. It won't be like it was with James," he said, swallowing hard.
Peggy reached a hand over and touched John's thigh. "I'm sorry," she said sincerely. John just shrugged again and put the key in the ignition.
The couple started driving, peaceful silence descending on the car. Peggy started a conversation. "You flinched earlier when Alex called us heteros. Why?" she inquired.
John flinched again and tightened his grip on the wheel. "Can we please not talk about that just now? Or ever? Please, it's not important," he begged.
Peggy persisted, asking, "But if it's not important then why can't you tell me?"
John simply didn't answer, turning on the radio as they drove through the streets of Manhattan. Peggy looked at him in confusion. "Why won't you talk to me about it?" she asked.
"Because I don't want to. Look, I never make you talk about stuff you're not comfortable discussing. Can I please have the same courtesy?" he asked.
Peggy nodded and the two continued, noticeable tension in the air between them.
Eventually, John pulled over, sighing.
"Look, I don't fully understand it but I just don't feel..... straight anymore. I still love you and, as I said, I don't know what's changed. But I promise you'll know if or when I figure it out," he said, glancing at Peggy sideways."Are you mad?" John heard himself ask, his voice sounding very small and far away.
"No, of course I'm not mad. Does this mean that you're gay now though? Should I get ready to say goodbye?" Peggy asked nervously.
John shook his head. "There's more non-straight, or queer, sexualities than just gay, you know. There's bisexual, pansexual, omnisexual, polysexual and so many more. But just because I might be into guys now, doesn't mean that I'm not into girls, into you. Okay?"
"Okay," Peggy whispered, leaning over and kissing John. "I love you and I'll support you no matter what."
"I love you too," John muttered as he kissed his girlfriend again.

Just some nice acceptance fluff. This was pretty long (for me when it comes to fluff) and nearly veered into angst, but I think this turned out pretty well.
