Intermediate: Make Amends

Year 14

Our first year of intermediate school passed by quickly and so did our second with Isa and Litheon continuously steering clear from one another. However, that all changed as we began our third year.

"I won't be attending school this year."

When I heard Isa's sudden revelation, I nearly tripped over my own feet and inhaled the cupcake I was eating. I began pounding my chest as Isa handed me a glass of water in a panic.

"My goodness! I didn't think you'd be so shocked!"

"No, no—It's okay." My throat became sore as I attempted to clear my throat one last time before letting out a sigh of relief. "So, is there a specific reason as to why you won't be attending this coming year?"

Her green eyes sparkled with excitement as she looked off into the distance dreamily.

"I'm going to be attending a music school abroad. To be able to study where my favorite producers did has always been my dream. Just thinking about it makes me nervous, yet excited at the same time."

I couldn't help the chuckle that escaped my lips as I watched her.

"Oh? How long will you be attending there?"

"Hm...I might stay for four years if my mother allows it, but for now I think I will be returning for the final year of high school."

"When are you going?"

"Soon, actually. My mother wants me to get familiar with the area so I wouldn't feel so lost."

"Let me know the day of your flight. I'll even miss my class if I have to."

She giggled as she rolled her eyes and shook her head.

"I leave on the sixth of April. There'll be no school so you'll have as much time as you need to see me off."

"Alright. Have you told anyone else yet?"

When I asked her this, her smiled became slightly rigid.

"Um...not yet. I haven't told Xael or...you know..."

"Do you plan on telling him?"

Her eyes were conflicted as she pursed her lips together.

"Perhaps it's time to make up?"

I stared at her with astonishment. I never expected that she'd ever initiate contact with Litheon again, however I was happy that she was considering it.

This time, looking at me for an answer, Isa asks, "Ryn, should I call him?"

"If you want to then you should." I tell her honestly.

"Ah..." The expression on her face grew awkward as she gave a helpless smile. "I—uh, I don't have his number..."

"That'd be a problem, wouldn't it?" I laughed as I handed her my phone. "Here you go."

Grabbing my phone, I watched as her thumb hovered his contact. Her eyes darted at the screen and then away constantly until she finally shut her eyes and pressed it.

The line rung for a few moments before he finally picked up. From my position, I could hear his chirpy voice from the audio.

"Why, look who it is calling me? Lonely without your best friend, Ryn?"

Isa stared at me in a panic, not knowing how to respond, however her silence caused Litheon to speak in confusion.

"Hello? Ryn? Are you there?"

Taking in a deep breath, Isa brought my phone to her lips as she finally responded.

"Um...it's actually Isa..."

The line fell silent for a moment, and just as Isa was about to end the call in a fit of anxiety, Litheon spoke in a surprisingly calm manner.

"Were you looking to speak to me?"

Giving her a reassuring nod, Isa continued to speak to him.

"I—um, yes...A-actually, I wanted to make amends...uh, with you."

"Ah...I...I truly regret hurting you like that."

"Oh no, I'm over it now. We were children back then and two years have already passed. It doesn't mean much—"

"—I liked you."

Isa froze in shock, nearly dropping my phone on the floor as Litheon continued.

"That was the real reason why I kissed you back then."

Isa fell silent as she took in the sudden information, her dark brows furrowed as her lips pressed into a straight line.

"Then, why did you push me away?"

"...I got scared when I saw the expression on your face and said it on impulse. I'm sorry."

"Back then...I also liked you." She let out a sigh as she stared out the window. "I didn't want to admit it, but I did, and even after that incident I still liked you...though I was angry and frustrated at your actions. However, now that so much time has passed, I decided that it would be better if we reconciled for the last time and finally become friends. What do you think?"

"...Are you leaving?"

Isa's eyes widened in surprise. "H-how did you know!?"

"I could just tell."

"...so..."

"I think it's better that we end as friends as well. I truly never would have thought this would ever happen. I'm truly impressed by you, Isa."

A faint blush brushed over her cheeks and she lightly pursed her lips in embarrassment.

"Mmhm. It feels good to speak with you again, Litheon."

Slowly, I backed out of my room and shut the door quietly.

"I'll just...be at the kitchen..."

Author's note:
I worked on this chapter for over a month trying to figure out how to word it properly, but I enjoyed writing this chapter.
The intermediate arc is ending soon!!!
But onto other exciting news...Certified Valedictorian!!
Also, I've chosen the college I will be attending! Currently working on my application for dorms (which are so expensive T-T) but I've been less stressed which is good!
I've been in more of a mood to write again, so I'm excited to wrap this story up!

Question:
How have you all been?
