I walked into school, if I could even call it that anymore - for one, it was more like a building site with the merging of the two schools. For another, I was dreading seeing everyone, even my friends.

It had been a full six weeks since I'd seen anyone from school. The final had been on the last day before the holidays - the day when I broke up with Jamie. It was going to be so awkward after not seeing any of them for so long.

I walked into our form tutor and sat down, thankfully without anyone noticing me, before realising I was sat behind Indira, who was quietly crying to herself.

"Indira? What's the matter?" I asked.

"Haven't you heard? Harry's moved to Coventry."

"Coventry?" I repeated in surprise. "But I thought you two had split up anyway?"

"We had, but it just made me realise I still had really strong feelings for him."

"Well, don't worry, you could go and visit him?" I offered. Suddenly, Indira looked up in surprise as another boy walked in, from Westfield.

"Who's that?" she said with a smile, her misery disappearing.

"How would I know?" I said, getting my books out of my bag.

Then, three people walked into the room whom i'd hoped to not see: Jamie, Jack and Dillon, followed by Nancy, Boggy's girlfriend shortly after.

I tensed up as Jamie and Jack took the seats behind me, as shown in the seating plan. Unfortunately, the seating plan also stated that the seat next to me was occupied by none other than Dillon. I stared straight ahead, avoiding eye contact as he slumped down into his chair.

"Nice holiday Cave?" He said, with no intention of actually finding out how my holidays went. "Heard you went to Spain."

"Yeah." I said.

"What, was that the furthest away you could get away from Jamie?"

I completely ignored him.

Then, just after the bell went, another girl bounded in, apologising to the teacher for being late and sitting down in a seat across the room. She wore a Westfield uniform, carrying a football under her shoulder and a bag on the other arm, with her hair tied back in a low ponytail.

Then the teacher began the lesson.

"Where did you disappear to in the holidays then?"

"Spain. You know that Indie." I replied, annoyed. I was trying to read in the break room, but Indira was hounding me with questions. We had hardly seen each other in the summer holidays. "I'm still confused of why you didn't want to come with me." I said.

"6 weeks in a boring apartment alone with nothing to do except talk to dad and Video Call people back here with terrible signal? Yeah, not really my thing." She replied.

"And yet, how I remember my holiday was a little different: chilling by the pool, watching sunsets on the beach in the sun. And that seems exactly like your sort of thing." I replied, and Indira huffed and walked off, leaving me alone in order to read my book.

But not for long. I realised a load of people were making their way out of the break room to the football pitches a little way away from the school building. Curious, I followed them, sneaking in with the rest of the crowd. I emerged onto the pitch and saw a few students, mostly members on the football team, sitting down and raising signs that read slogans like 'Save our pitches', and singing chants.

What was going on? I wondered to myself.

"Hey!" I yelled to Dillon who was half-heartedly chanting along with the other members of the team. "What's going on?"

"Haven't you heard? They want to put temporary classrooms on the football pitches."

"But where will we play?" I replied incredulously.

"Nowhere." Dillon replied with an eye-roll. "Why do you think we're sat on football pitches in the freezing cold staging a protest?"

"Knowing you you're probably only doing it to skip lessons." I said, and Dillon glared at me.

"Listen, Cave. I don't care if you've been away for ages, it doesn't change anything I said after the final." Dillon said.

"What?" I replied.

"Don't forget I know things about you. Maybe Jamie and Jack know now, but no one else does." He said maliciously, and I hesitated before leaving, realising it didn't matter how long or far I'd been away, I couldn't outrun the past.
