Part 52 - The Trials

Jack's dad offered to take me to the trials, as my mum was working. Indira knew what a big deal the trial was, and still didn't care, so that was great. When I'd asked if she wanted to come watch, she said refused, saying she had homework. I knew she did, but it's not like she was going to do it anyway.

I walked out the door on Saturday with my kit just in time as Jack and her dad pulled up.

"Ready?"

"Kind of." I replied, realizing what a big opportunity this was.

Jack laughed. "C'mon." She said, motioning for me to get in the car.

"Are you surprised? That Zoe got a trial?" Jack asked after we set off for the training ground where they were holding the trials.

"Am I surprised that Zoe got a trial? Jack I'm surprised I got a trial! I suppose the scout just didn't want me to feel left out." I said jokingly, which made Jack scoff, and I smiled.

"Would you really move to London if you got through?" I asked.

"Would you?"

I thought for a moment. "Yes. I mean, I'd hope so. My mum would have to take it seriously if I got through."

"Would you move to London with me dad?" Jack said to her dad, leaning over so he could hear.

"Of course I would. We'd find a way to do it Jack, I promise." He said with a reassuring smile.

Eventually, we made it to the training ground. It was massive. We signed in at reception then made our way to the changing rooms. There were already around 8 girls in there getting ready. They looked bigger, stronger, than both of us, and nerves started to set in.

After we changed, we made our way out onto the pitch to warm up, but I noticed something.

"Where's Zoe?" I said in a low voice, trying not to attract the attention of the coach who was roaming around, scrutinizing everyone already it seemed.

Jack just shrugged. And I couldn't ignore the hit of a smile cross her face; she must have been worried about the competition from Zoe.

As we continued warming up, we heard a sound from behind us, running towards the pitch, and the sound of bike wheels.

"Sorry I'm late!" A familiar voice called out, and we turned to see Zoe running alongside her bike, her face red and sweating; she must have cycled all the way here.

"We're pretty big on punctuality here." the coach said as Zoe caught her breath.

"I'm sorry." she apologised, looking up in anticipation of what the coach would say.

She seemed to think for a second then nodded. "Well, if you get through today, you'll have to sharpen up." she said, and made her way out to the other girls.

Jack looked less than pleased but still smiled at Zoe.

"Hey Zoe." I said with a slightly more genuine smile. "You okay?"

"Fine, thanks." she said bluntly, and I raised my eyebrows. Zoe was on edge for some reason.

"Okay everyone! Line up." the coach yelled and the group of girls immediately got into the formation, Me, Jack and Zoe in a line in that order. "Remember, there's only one place up for grabs, so give it your best shot. We'll do skills test first, then a match where you'll all get your chance to shine." she began handing out bibs to every other girl in the line. "The test is simple: navigate the poles in the shortest possible time. Speed and control. Remember, it's a race." she finished, giving out the last two bibs to me and Zoe.

"You probably reckon you're through already." Zoe said suddenly to Jack, both girls still looking ahead, their faces set.

"No." Jack said, a hint of surprise in her voice.

"Good cos you're not. Believe me."

A/N: Sorry! Bit of a short chapter and I'm sorry for taking so long to update.

If you've watched it, what does everyone think of the new series so far? I'm struggling to enjoy it as much as last season just because it's more focused on the Under-14s and less on Jamie and Dillon and Zoe, ect. Hopefully they will come later on. But I am still enjoying it and it'll be nice to have some new stuff to write about when I get there.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the chapter 😊
