"I need to tell you something."

    "Okay," Nova said hesitantly.

Ethan exhaled. Why was this so difficult? It definitely wasn't the worst situation they'd been in.

Just as he was about to speak, his phone decided to ring.

   "Go ahead," Nova encouraged him.

He looked at the screen to see it was Mason calling.

Crap.

    "Who is it?" Nova asked.

    "It's Mason," He answered hesitantly.

Now I see why Mason didn't lie to Jade.

"He's probably just calling to check on us," He assured her. It technically wasn't a lie.

He answered the phone.

"Hi, Mason," Ethan said through clenched teeth.

    "Ethan, Judith-"

    "Nova," He said rather loudly.

"Is here. Standing with me. Would you like to speak to her?"

Mason got the hint.

    "Right. Of course."

     "No, it's alright," Nova said.

     "You go first."

Ethan gave her a look as if to say "Are you sure?" She nodded. Ethan headed out of the bathroom and stepped outside to prevent eavesdropping.

"What did she say?" Ethan asked once he got outside.

    "She said she doesn't know."

"What the hell to you mean she doesn't know? How can she not-"

"Let me finish!" Mason said. Ethan could almost feel him rolling his eyes over the phone.

"She said she would ask the other district leaders. One of them must know."

"What am I supposed to tell Nova in the meantime?"

     "I don't know, the truth?"

"Well I can't do that yet, now can I?" Ethan responded sarcastically.

"Find something else to keep her busy."

Ethan sighed. Again. It was starting to become a strange habit.

"Is that Ethan again?" He heard Jade's voice in the background.

"You don't even call me this much," She said suspiciously.

"That's because I'm always with you," Mason reminded her.

Ethan stepped back inside.

"Is Mason still there?" Nova asked once he got inside.

He nodded.

"Also, Ethan, your mom left you this note," Nova said.

She pressed a button on the fridge.

"Ethan, I'm going for a walk. And forcing Alex to come with me," Janet's voice came from the refrigerator.

"I need you to run to the store for me to pick up some things we're missing, like my good shampoo."

Ethan groaned and ran his fingers through his hair again.

"Also, I don't want any grandchildren while I'm gone. Yet. Love you!"
