Chapter 98

"You still like Marvel, Raj?" I ask him, smiling.

"I still kind of like it, not as crazy about it as I was back then." He says. I don't know but my heart sinks a little bit. I'd missed out on a lot. It's not because of the marvel thing, it's just weird to feel like I don't know them. I think they sensed this, because Anya changed the topic.

"So, what do you do Shanaya?"

"I'm actually an elementary school teacher. I teach little first graders. It's so fun." I say, smiling.

"That's awesome, Shanaya!"

"Yeah, that sounds perfect for you!" They both say. Noah's hand clutches mine under the table.

Raj glances at the time.

"Oh, shoot. Shanaya, I have to go back, I have a full day of classes tomorrow." Raj says, looking sad.

"Hey, don't worry about it. Maybe we can go for dinner after your classes tomorrow?" I ask him, and he smiles.

"I should probably be getting back as well. IF you see Nikul, tell him hi from us." Anya says, getting up.

"Wait! Before you guys go, can we exchange numbers? We can stay in touch. I'm going back to New York next week, so if you guys ever want to visit-"
"Yes! Let's do that." Any says excitedly, and the three of us quickly exchange numbers.

"Bye guys, I'll see you tomorrow!" I say, waving oodbye to them, and before I know it, they're gone again.

"Mumma, thank you so much. Really. I can't thank you enough-"

"Stop saying thank you for such little things. We're family Shanaya. Don't thank me for that." I hug her again, a few stray tears slipping out of my eyes.

I pull away after a minute, and see Fiona fast asleep on the couch.

"Oh my god, we've been talking for 3 hours. It's past midnight." I say, smiling.

"Let's go to bed. Fiona can have Nikul's room, you both take Shanaya's room. I put out clean sheets for you already."

"Thank you, mumma." I go to wake up Fiona, when Noah lifts her up, kissing her forehead, saying goodnight to my mom, taking her upstairs.

"I like him." My mom says, her eyes kind and warm.

"Me too." She smiles at me.

"He's a good person, mumma. He's fantastic. He and Fiona are so close too, and it's so sweet. He's-"

"You really love him, don't you?"

"Yeah. I do." She stands with me for a moment, before patting my shoulder.

"Go to bed, kanna. I'll see you in the morning." She gives me a smile, hugging my side, and going to her bedroom. I go upstairs to see Noah. I shut the door, locking it, and change into my pajamas, climbing in right beside Noah. He turns to face me, bare chested, and handsome, putting an arm around my waist, tugging me to him.

"Today was a good day." I whisper to him.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

He shifts our position, so that my head rests on his chest, my arm is around is torso, and arm is around me.

"I haven't seen them in twelve years, you know?" He doesn't say anything, but I know he's listening.

"When my parents got divorced they stopped talking to us. My aunt, grandma, everyone. It-it still hurts. I was close to my aunt and grandma as well, and I haven't seen them in god knows how long. But they wouldn't let Nikul and I speak to our cousins. We were all so close. So close. And now, I don't even know them. Twelve years, Noah. Twelve fucking years. People keep saying family is blood, and it's- there's this concept of family being there for us. Forever. Like whenever we need, they're going to be there. But they abandoned us. They abandoned me when I needed them the most. It hurts. It still fucking hurts sometimes. I-I can't understand how people can even do something like that."
