Vincenzo didn't look angry. He looked pleased, actually. He was leaning back in his oversized black leather chair, watching as I stepped inside without knocking. He had to have known I was there, what with the screaming from earlier and the smell of decaying bodies within his house.
I shut the door behind me and stared at him.
"Want to call off your little zombie horde?" He smiled slightly. "I'd hate to have to obliterate them. They're so cute."
Cute. Yes, because a bunch of undead walking through someone's house is cute. I thought so too. Absolutely adorable. Put little bows on their head and they're like perfect little presents.
Right.
I didn't say anything. I was waiting to find out about my mom before I decided what to do. I didn't want to assume they hurt her, though it was looking more and more like they had.
"Right." He leaned forward. "What exactly are you here for, Nova? Your mom? Your heart? Both?"
I kept my mouth closed. Something I knew was that the quieter you are, the more the other person would talk to fill the silence. Especially if you enjoyed hearing your own voice like this buffoon did.
He killed me. He drained me, broke my neck, and stole my heart. Not only that, he took my mother as well. What did he expect? Me to smile at him and tell him sure I will tell the undead to just walk out of his house? Please. The more I looked at him, the more I wanted to punch that smug smirk off of his face.
"Sweet little Nova," he cooed. "You look so angry. It's adorable. Someone who screamed for me to stop draining her of her blood coming back trying to look tough. Did you do your research on me before you came crashing into my house? Or did you assume your little army of dead people would be enough?"
I blinked slowly.
He opened a drawer in his desk and slid a container out. It was filled with a clear liquid, and floating in that liquid was a beating heart. It beat at a much slower tempo than normal, which told me it was more than likely mine.
Lovely.
I looked back at him.
"I'll give you three options here." He tapped the lid. "Which I think is quite kind of me, speaking you won't get out of here alive if you think you can outsmart me. Number one, I'll give you your heart and your mother back, but you're mine. Every piece of you. Your heart will go back into your body and I will turn you into my vampire, and you will do absolutely everything I ask of you."
That sounded like a hell of a great time.
Said absolutely no one ever.
I tilted my head.
"Number two," he tapped the lid twice - making me question whether he realized I knew basic math, "I'll give you your mom back, but the heart is mine. It's a good bargaining chip for later, I'd say. More so than your useless mother."
Keep talking shit, big bad vampire. The longer you talk, the better.
I heard a crackle through my earpiece, but then it went silent. That small noise had made my stomach tighten in nervousness, and it must have shown, because Vincenzo's eyes zeroed in on my posture. He couldn't have heard the noise. My ear piece was down as low as it could go without it being completely turned off. It was just enough that I could hear it if someone's voice came through.
"Number three." Three taps, and he grinned like this was his favorite of the choices. "I kill your mom...in front of you, of course. Then I will crush your heart. And then I will send a video of me fucking your lifeless corpse to your three boyfriends."
I stiffened despite myself.
"What?" His eyes widened in feigned shock. "Did you think I was as stupid as you are, going after you without doing my research on you first? How do you keep them all in line, hm? I wouldn't share like they do. I don't like to share my belongings."
"Nova!" The voice rang through my earpiece and it was the only thing that stopped me from going after Vincenzo. Silus's voice was breathy, and somewhat nervous. "Your mom...she's...well, she's alive but she's hurt and out of it."
"How hurt," I asked, not caring that Vincenzo could hear. She was outside with the people who came to help me find her. I didn't worry that he would make a beeline to her. He made it obvious he didn't care about her life. He cared about mine though.
"Bruises," he answered. "Some cuts. She looks like she's been drugged too."
Vincenzo tilted his head, allowing me to have my conversation. And in that moment, I knew he had been aware the entire time that my mom was being led out of the house. He had also allowed it to happen, because once again, he didn't care about her life. She was cannon fodder.
I didn't respond to Silus, and the earpiece went silent again.
"What's even cuter than your attempt," he was standing in front of me before I could even take a breath, "is the fact you thought I had no clue what you were doing."
I looked up at him, and the anger I thought I'd feel about my mom never came. I was afraid by his proximity and the idea that he knew exactly what was happening before it could even happen. I froze in his presence again. Horrified.
His hand wrapped around my throat so hard that tears immediately sprang to my eyes from the pain. He pushed, squeezing my neck and digging his nails into my skin.
His smile was wicked as he watched me struggle. Then it clicked. What the hell was I doing?
I slammed my hand against the wall, mentally shouting at the zombies to do what I had said before. To kill everyone. If I was going down, they'd go down too. He'd have to rebuild this little fucking empire he made from the ground up.
I bore my teeth at him, and his eyes lit up with an excitement I'd only ever read about. He was reveling in my anger, in my sudden need to fight back. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was turning him on.
I threw my knee up and into his groin so hard that he actually took a couple steps back. I gasped in a breath, grasping my throat as I was wracked with coughs.
"Nova," Kieran's voice came through my earpiece, "she's worse than that."
I swallowed, and my body went numb.
"They didn't just drug her," he continued, his voice somber. "They practically overdosed her. It looks like it was recent."
My vision became blurry, and I raised my head to look at Vincenzo. The world around me swam, and I stumbled. I caught myself on the wall and clenched my eyes shut, trying to make the world stop fucking spinning.
"Get her out," I whispered.
"They are," he said. "We can-"
I opened my eyes again, seeing red dancing in my vision.
"Stay out," I said as the ground began shaking. "Do not come in here."
Because I was about to bring the entire building to ground fucking zero.
