I bit down hard on my bottom lip, drawing blood in an attempt to stop myself from laughing. Kieran glanced at me, then to the blood, and then to my phone against my ear.

"I'm sorry, Merlin." I coughed to conceal the laugh. "What did you say?"

"I said," he was pissed, "I don't require your heart anymore. I've cancelled the contract. In fact, I'll even put it back in your body."

Oh, my mother.

"What changed your mind?" I really shouldn't have asked. I was already on the verge of dying laughing at the idea that my mom called and scolded him. I imagined her sitting in her hospital bed reaming him a new one for even assuming she'd be okay with him taking my heart. Also, he'd put it back? I wondered how that was brought up.

"Some other things came up and I don't believe I'm capable of handling something like the top necromancer's heart." He spat the words out and I grinned.

Kieran's full attention was on me then, watching as I continued chewing on my lip to keep myself from laughing while Merlin was on the phone.

I should have waited to leave. Even if I would have sat outside and listened, I really wished I would have heard what she said.

Even if I hadn't spoken with my mom beforehand, I would have known she had something to do with why Merlin sounded so angry. I wasn't sure what she had over his head, or what she threatened, but I couldn't be bothered to care. I was going to have my heart back.

"I'll be over in a week," he stated dryly. "I'll return your heart into your chest at that time."

"Hey, Merlin," I said before he hung up.

"What," he asked.

I didn't think he'd ever do anything for me again. Not after being promised something as "special" as my heart, and then having it ripped from his grasp like it was nothing. I didn't need a death mage on my side, but I certainly didn't need him against me either.

"Is there something else you'd like," I asked.

Kieran scowled, then leaned in and ran his tongue over my bottom lip, licking the blood there. I stared at him incredulously, then pointed at the phone like maybe he didn't realize that I was on a phone call. It was reminiscent of what Lucian did when I was on the phone with Bard.

"Yes, actually." Merlin's voice perked up, like he'd been waiting the entire phone conversation for me to bring it up. I did owe him. I didn't know what he killed to find my heart, or if he even had to kill something to find it. But it couldn't have been as easy as him wishing to find it. He put in work, and I had to thank him in some way.

Kieran pulled my chair to his, still scowling.

I gave him a stern look.

He pulled me to him, then grinned up at me when I was forced to straddle him or topple over.

I shook my head.

"And what is it you'd like," I asked, squirming when I felt his hands slip below the waistband of my pants to cup my ass.

He kneaded the flesh there, rocking me into him. It was my turn to scowl, but he only smiled sweetly, like he wasn't fondling my ass while I was on the phone with someone.

"It's harmless," Merlin said. "At least, more so than giving up your heart."

Kieran's hand inched down slightly.

"Uh huh," I said back to Merlin.

Kieran's fingers dipped lower, and soon his fingers slid just slightly into me.
