I thought I was awkward around one of them. In front of all three? Hell. I might as well just not even try to make coherent sentences.

Lucian, Kieran, Kyler, and I sat at my kitchen table. Every single one of them kept their eyes on me, watching as I tried to explain what happened in the morgue. I didn't know too much either; just what was said by the two women. As much as I didn't want to admit it, I was pretty sure my father was a part of it in some way.

People didn't just scream when they saw a lookalike.

When I finished, I wondered if anything I said even made sense. Their gazes were too intense throughout my retelling that I wasn't sure if I completed any of my sentences.

"So it doesn't seem like your father is the ringleader," Kieran said, leaning back in the chair. "But finding your father means you'd likely find the one who is."

Lucian crossed his arms. "Have you received any notice of another vampire clan entering your territory?"

Kieran shook his head. "No. They are supposed to notify me, and even if they don't, my people would tell me if they saw anyone. As far as I know, no one has seen anyone outside of my clan in my territory. Which is concerning, since I don't believe Selene ever left my territory without telling me."

By the look on Lucian's face, his situation was similar.

Normally, vampire clans and wereanimal packs didn't cross territories. The city we lived in was large enough to where they could have their own sides, but I did know that the Crimson Shadow Pack and Kieran's clan came to an agreement before Lucian ever rose to be alpha. They had their own areas that were strictly theirs, but most of the city was shared and neutral territory. It didn't mean that they cared for each other, and I wasn't sure of the terms, but it did make for a larger area of rule for the two of them.

I felt so out of the loop.

Kieran eyed me. "Your mother never said anything about your father? No pictures, memories, anything?"

I shrugged. "I was the product of a one night stand. My mom had no idea he was a vampire until I was born and I kept getting sick because I didn't have enough blood. My father knows I exist, because I can feel a type of bond between us. But he's never tried to get in contact with me or find me."

Kyler - ever the touchy werewolf - reached under the table and placed a hand on my knee. And I - ever the accommodating one to said touchy werewolf - placed my hand over his and squeezed it. I wasn't sure if he was trying to comfort me, or if he just felt like he had to touch me, but he always did it when I needed it the most.

Kieran tilted his head and stared at the table like he could see through it. "By the way, Nova…how are you feeling?"

I raised my eyebrows. "I'm fine. Why?"

He finally met my eyes. "You just found out your father might be playing a part in the kidnapping and murders of wereanimals and vampires alike. Also, you've been walking a little strangely today."

It took every bit of effort I had not to look at Lucian. That would only confirm the obvious insinuation. I was pretty sure he knew without me telling him why it was I wasn't walking normally.

"Well," I said, "I'd say it isn't only a possibility he's playing a part in it. Something tells me that, with my luck, it's going to be him."

Kieran hummed, his eyes trailing over to Lucian. Their eyes locked, and I could almost feel the tension rising in the air. If ever there was a silent conversation, those two were having one. And it didn't seem friendly.

I could only play the dog card so many times, especially with Lucian next to me to hear it. The last time I called him a puppy to his face, he had to manhandle me to the bathroom because I couldn't walk. I wondered if blood would help with that, or if it was one of those things like working out.

I tried working out months before, and stopped when I noticed that the pain lasted longer than I anticipated. I healed quickly - I could act like a normal human being after some sleep - but it wasn't quick enough for my liking.

Kyler's hand slid up to my thigh and I cleared my throat in an attempt to stop him. It worked. But it also brought Lucian and Kieran's attention to me.

"You two can stop eye fucking each other," I said, waving my hand absentmindedly. "Or eye killing each other. I really can't tell. Anyway…with my father more than likely being a part of this, I figure I'm still needed."

"If anything," Lucian said, "you just need to continue doing what you're doing. Even if you're not doing anything, you need to act like you're still helping. If what Beverly said was true, and they are watching you, I think eventually they'll show themselves."

"That's going to put her in a lot of danger." Kyler squeezed my leg before letting it go.

Kieran nodded. "It will, yes. But until we think of a better solution, or find them ourselves, it's the best we can do. There will be someone here or with her at all times."

I loved when people talked about me like I wasn't there. I didn't know how to fight, but I needed time by myself. He made it seem like I'd forever have someone inside my house, watching me like someone was going to come in and take me at any second.

I tapped my fingers on the table, wishing I knew something about my father that could be of help. Any time I asked my mom about him, all she did was tell me he was handsome. When I got older, she admitted to it being the best night of her life, which was why she never ended up getting married. No one did it like he did. I think that, if I knew him, that would have grossed me out. As it was, it only served to make me sad.

My mom deserved the world. She was the most giving and caring person I'd ever met, and I wasn't just saying that because she was my mom. She lived over one thousand miles away, but if I needed her at any point, she would drop everything she was doing just to come and make sure I was okay.

She moved to New York after I got my own place and got settled. She never gave me much of a reason. It was just time, she said. Time to move on from the place that held so many fond memories, as well as the not so good memories.

I think, even after that night, she built my father up so much in her head that a part of her loved him to some extent. I didn't know the details of their relationship outside of the one night stand. But I guessed he had to be really good, if she was still keening over him twenty three years and some change later.

"Nova?"

My eyes shot up to Kieran.

"Did you hear me?" He reached out and stopped my tapping fingers.

I rubbed my face. "No, sorry."

He smiled gently. "I asked you if you were okay with one of us being here. We can leave you to yourself during the day, if you'd like."

Oh, now they were asking. How kind.

"Do I really have a choice," I asked.

That gentle smile became the smirk I'd come to associate with him. "No, I guess you don't."
