I didn't fall asleep with anything covering me, but when my mind came back into awareness, I had something draped across my stomach. It was heavier than a blanket, but just as soft against my skin where my shirt had ridden up. The longer I laid there, my mind awake but my eyes closed, I started to realize exactly what it was.

The thing laying on me was warm - much warmer than me. And it was breathing.

I opened my eyes and looked down, seeing a pure white wolf curled up against me with its head on my stomach, its head moving up and down with my breaths. Its eyes opened and were such a pure blue that they were almost white. If it hadn't been for the fact that I was struck speechless by how beautiful the wolf was, I would have probably screamed.

It raised its head the moment Lucian walked in.

Lucian didn't even look surprised to see the wolf in bed with me, which that in itself was concerning. The wolf didn't hurt me, like he'd promised, but I kind of expected to also be left alone. Like without someone from his pack curling up and napping with me.

"You look horrified," Lucian teased. "Kyler just felt you having a nightmare."

I didn't even remember what I dreamt.

I looked back at the wolf. "Thank you."

I watched as the wolf body shifted, bones cracking and shortening into something wholly different. The white fur disappeared and was replaced by pale skin. Those eyes turned human, but kept the same icy blue from when he was in wolf form.

I couldn't even be shocked by his nudity. He was just as beautiful as a human as he was in his wolf form. Shaggy blonde hair covered one eye and curled at the nape of his neck, and those eyes watched me curiously like he wasn't sure what he was doing there either.

"You're welcome," he finally said, and his voice didn't match his body at all. He seemed young, but not much younger than me. Maybe nineteen or twenty. His body was thinner than most wolves I'd seen in human form. But his voice was deep, like the promise of what he'd become when he was just a few years older was right there in his grasp.

He tilted his head to look at my hand that I hadn't even realized I lifted.

"I'm sorry." I lowered my hand, remembering how Lucian reacted to me touching him by puffing out a noise and turning from me like he hadn't liked it.

Kyler grabbed my hand gently and brought it up to his hair. "It's fine. You can touch me."

I ran my fingers through his hair and moved it away from his eyes. I didn't know what the fascination was with him, but he was so different from Lucian. Maybe it was because he wasn't the alpha, or maybe it was because he had every opportunity to harm me, yet he just laid with me as I had nightmares to comfort me. But the beautiful man beside me just watched me as I touched his hair, then his cheek. He turned his face into my hand and closed his eyes, like he was taking comfort from my touch.

When I finally tore my eyes away from him, I saw that Lucian was smiling gently at the two of us.

"I'm sorry," I repeated, finally allowing my hand to fall.

"Don't be," he said. "Thank you."

I wanted to ask why he thanked me, but he stood from the bed and walked over to a pile of clothes on the floor. The idea that he walked in fully clothed, took off said clothes beside me, and shifted would have freaked me out under any other circumstance. But I was somewhat thankful.

Kyler nodded his goodbye, and moved past Lucian out the door to leave us alone.

"I should probably explain," Lucian said, closing the door.

I didn't know what he meant.

"Kyler came to me about an hour ago and said he felt your pain from across the house." He remained by the door, watching me. "He asked if he could comfort you."

I hadn't realized anyone would care.

"He's incredibly empathetic," he explained. "He was before he became a wolf, but it doubled after his first shift. He feels any and all negative emotions, but generally it's only with other wereanimals or people he's grown attached to."

I was neither of those things, so I wasn't sure why he would have felt my emotions so strongly. I didn't bring that up though, because I was sure he was already considering what it meant.

"I told him he could." He waited, and I assumed he was waiting for a reaction. "The moment he shifted and laid next to you, the fear and sadness you felt all but disappeared."

"You could feel it too," I asked.

He nodded. "Somewhat. As the alpha, I feel what my pack feels. Which means, I feel when Kyler gets anxious. He wasn't anxious anymore when he laid next to you."

That also raised another important question.

"Does that mean you can feel when they die," I asked.

It wasn't meant to be rude, but after I said it, I cringed. I probably could have worded it better, but it was too late to take it back or even to explain the reason I asked. The moment the words came out, Lucian's eyes narrowed.

"Is that your way of asking if Jason's still alive?" He had a careful undertone to his voice that caused a shiver to run up my spine.

"Yes," I said, not meeting his eyes. "I meant no harm with the question, so I'm sorry if it came across wrong."

"I can feel when members of my pack die." He stepped towards me, and my eyes moved to meet his. "Jason is still alive. Also, don't feel the need to apologize for asking questions. You're about to be questioned by my entire pack."

No wonder he wanted me to take a nap before I met them.
