The next day, I sat with a hot coffee to my lips and Naomi staring at me like I grew three heads.

I, of course, told her about the previous night and what happened. With her being my best friend, I'm not able to keep many secrets from her. She was my go-to, and I was hers. It just seemed like I was having more problems than she was recently.

"What did he say when you sent him a text saying you were okay?" She was grinning.

My eyes widened as I stood and walked over to where my phone was charging. I hadn't checked it since last night, and even then all I did was plug it in and go to bed. I didn't even think about texting him.

There were four messages.

"Son of a bitch," I whispered.

She was behind me in a second. "Oh-ho, girl you're screwed."

The first three texts were from Lucian. All throughout the night, asking if I was okay and if I needed anything. The last text he sent was just "Okay, Nova". Then I had a text from an unknown number from five minutes ago.

Unknown: Might want to either hide or have a really good reason as to why you didn't text him.

I messaged the number back.

Me: What kind of ominous text is that?

Unknown: Just trying to save your ass.

For some reason, the thought of my ass needing saved at all when it came to Lucian made my heart skip. What was he going to do? Break into my house and hurt me? I doubted it.

Then again, the last time I thought he was going to hurt me, he actually just pulled me onto his lap.

That wasn't a better option. If anything, that made me even more nervous.

There was a knock on my door that had me almost jumping out of my skin. My heart was in my throat as I turned to the door.

"I got you," Naomi said. "Go sit down."

I loved her. I didn't know if she knew how much, but if she was about to save my ass, I would honestly kiss her ass for weeks.

The moment I sat down, she opened the door.

"Can I help you?" She sounded annoyed.

"Is Nova here," Lucian asked.

The door closed, and I wondered briefly if she shut it in his face. Before I could enjoy that mental image, they both appeared around the corner.

The moment his eyes met mine, they narrowed.

"I've been taking care of her," Naomi said, continuing to walk towards me. Her eyes widened in shock, at what I assume was Lucian's appearance, but she kept her voice neutral.

His eyebrows raised and he looked from me to Naomi, then back again.

"Not like that," I muttered.

She turned around and crossed her arms. "While I'm sure that mental image is hot as hell, she drank too much blood last night and was lethargic this morning. She didn't even charge her freaking phone until an hour ago. I thought she died."

Oh, I'd kiss her if she'd let me.

I kept my face stoic, like I had no idea that he texted me, and like that unknown number hadn't warned me that he was on his way. I'd have to text that unknown number and tell them I loved them.

"Then she gets this ominous ass text message from an unknown number," she held up my phone, "telling her to hide."

Lucian rolled his eyes. "Kyler."

I loved the unknown number even more then. I'd have to say thanks whenever Lucian decided to leave.

"So you're okay," he asked.

I nodded. "I only ever drink cold blood from a bag. So having a mixture of vampire and wereanimal blood straight from the vein caused a bit of a high. I'm fine though."

He looked me over, his eyes pausing on my mouth, then my chest, then back up.

I was wearing one of the shirts he bought me, mostly because I wasn't planning on going out that day. Honestly, the guy could pick out some comfortable shirts, even though it was tighter than I usually wore. The fabric was soft against my skin, and didn't suffocate me like most t-shirts did. It made me wonder about him.

If he knew what kinds of fabric felt good, did he ask someone? Or did he do this for another woman in a previous relationship? I wasn't jealous. Not in the least. But I did wonder how he knew the best fit and fabric.

Naomi handed me my phone and I took it, pretending to look through the texts for the first time.

"I'm sorry I didn't text." I slid my phone into my pocket and smiled at him. "My mind hasn't been in it. And I just had my coffee before you showed up."

The little bit of anger he felt when he walked in seemed to disappear completely.

"It's okay," he said. "I was just worried. I left you in a" - he cleared his throat and motioned towards the couch - "bad state."

My eyebrows shot up. Was he acting shy?

"A bad state I've been in plenty before," I responded. "You forget, I've had to drink blood my entire life."

It started hitting me differently when I became fifteen. Like the sudden hormone changes made the blood swim deeper and cause a more…adult...reaction. My mom - bless her heart - knew what was coming and tried to explain it, but I didn't understand and didn't want to listen. I figured it'd be like every other time when I'd drink it and get a sudden burst of energy.

I got a sudden burst of energy alright.

He nodded, as if he understood. Maybe he did, in a sense.

Naomi crossed her arms. "Do I need to leave or are you going to stop eye fucking each other?"

I coughed, covering my face with a hand in an attempt to hide the shock and embarrassment.

"It wouldn't be eye fucking if you weren't here," Lucian replied smoothly.

Oh, for the love of…

"You must be a werewolf magnet," Naomi cooed at me. "Kyler looked at you like he wanted to fuck you at the mall."

I didn't want to kiss her anymore. Actually, I wanted to throw her off a bridge. What she was doing was not covering my ass at all. She was just setting it on fire.

Lucian puffed out a laugh. "If that was supposed to surprise me, it doesn't. He's been attracted to Nova since he met her."

Naomi took her phone out and texted something. When my phone vibrated, I pretended to not have felt it. If I pulled it out and read it, he'd know she was texting me.

"It wasn't supposed to surprise you at all," she said, grinning. "I just wanted to see if I was right. Anyway! Nova, I'm going to head out. I have some things I need to get done anyway, and I assume he's here to talk business."

I glared at her.

Don't you leave me, I thought angrily at her.

But of course she couldn't hear my thoughts. So she went to the table, grabbed her cup of coffee, and excused herself out of the house with a wave and a motion to her phone.

I finally pulled my phone out.

Naomi: Now you have three on that list of yours. You're going to be a busy girl.
