I spent most of the day with Lucian, and he only teased me about the sex toys twice. On top of that, though, he also told me what he and Kieran talked about as he drove me home.

Apparently Kieran brought up that I'd been looking for Lucian's wolf, and that raised some questions as to what may have happened to his vampire. While both sides still weren't completely trusting of each other, they came to an agreement.

They would work together to try and find the missing people, but neither of them could tell anyone within their respective groups. The vampires from Kieran's clan, and the werewolves from Lucian's pack, would not be happy to hear of the agreement. So they decided it would be better to remain silent.

When I asked why he was telling me, he didn't answer for a while.

"Because you've been helping me," he said. "I figured you had a right to know."

That brought up another important question.

"Do you still need me," I asked.

If the two top dogs were going to work with each other, I didn't see a reason why I needed to continue assisting Lucian. Kieran had more power than I could ever wish to have, and all I did was pretend to be infatuated with a wolf I never met.

"Yes," he replied. "We both do. I don't much care for Kieran, and obviously the feeling is mutual from his side. It has nothing to do with his race…it's just that some of the things he said rubbed me the wrong way."

"What did he say," I asked.

His fingers tightened on the steering wheel, and he once again went silent. If it hadn't been for the fact that the car was quiet, I would have wondered if he heard me at all.

"It's almost like he has an ulterior motive for everything he says." It wasn't really an answer, and he knew it.

Kieran got under his skin somehow. Maybe he insinuated that he still believed Lucian had a hand in stealing his vampire, and the trust between them only reached as far as they could throw each other - although, that might not have been a good analogy. They both could probably throw each other rather far, if they tried. But the concept was the same.

Kieran didn't get to the top by assuming everyone was a good guy, and Lucian didn't get to the top by acting the good guy.

Alphas became alphas through a lot of hard work. Unfortunately, that also meant he more than likely killed the last alpha of his pack to reach the top. I had never heard of an alpha who had clean hands in that regard.

The master vampire of a city was notably the strongest vampire of that city. Usually they were the oldest, but in some cases, it was the one that had the most power and authority. Kieran's presence alone proved his power.

Also, top dogs didn't get along well, probably due to the constant need to be at the top.

I honestly couldn't say who would win that fight between Lucian and Kieran.

I let the previous statement go, even though I was curious as to what Kieran said. I just felt it would be a waste to pry, because Lucian wouldn't tell me something he didn't want to.

"So," I said, "am I playing the middle-man?"

"In a sense." He turned down my road.

Oh, good. I wouldn't really know until it happened then.

He pulled up into my driveway and put the car in park. His eyes moved to my front door and remained there, and I couldn't decide if he wanted me to get out or invite him inside.

I decided on the former, and unbuckled my seat belt.

"The next time I see you," he said as I reached for the door handle, "you need to be prepared."

I froze, my eyes on the door handle. "Prepared…for what?"

I couldn't look at him. The air in the car suddenly became too thick, and I wanted nothing more than to step out and breathe.

The car filled with his scent, and within seconds it became almost unbearable. My body shook, my hands began sweating, and my eyes seemed to close on their own.

"Aw," he murmured. "I don't even have to touch you."

I forced my eyes open and turned my head towards him. His eyes were bright, and his pupils were dilated as he took in my shaking with an amused tilt of his lips.

"Apparently pheromones work on half vampires too," he continued. "That'll be fun to play with."

I would have cussed him out if it weren't for the fact that my mouth was as dry as a desert. As it was, I couldn't do more than try to focus on breathing enough to not pass out without inhaling too much of his scent. It was difficult, to say the least.

"As for what," he rested his head against his seat and grinned, the scent of him disappearing as quickly as it came, "I think at this point, you know. Unless you really want me to spell it out."

When I didn't respond, he lifted a hand and ran a thumb over my bottom lip, successfully pulling it from between my teeth.

Did I want him to spell it out? Probably not. If he was going to do the same thing he did at the restaurant, I wasn't sure I'd be able to get out of his car and walk to my door without tripping and falling over my own two feet.

"You're a pretty big flirt," I finally said, "for a puppy."

He laughed, but it wasn't like any laugh I'd ever heard. It was deep and filled with something I couldn't quite place - which told me I probably shouldn't have called him puppy. I said it to try and change the mood into something a little more light-hearted, but it only served to deepen the mood from before.

I really needed to learn how to read a room better.

"I'm no puppy," he said. "But I'd love for you to call me that again, Nova."

That was definitely a warning instead of an invitation, so I said absolutely nothing.

"Good girl." He grinned. "Text me when Kieran wants you to visit him."

"Why," I asked.

"So that I can make sure he's not doing something stupid," he said.

I wasn't sure that was it, but I nodded anyway before forcing myself to open the door and get out of his car.

The fresh air was welcome, and I breathed deeply.

I need to take some time away from the alpha, I thought, shutting the car door.
