Thoughts of You

The clock on the wall read "3:00 am." Clay sat in the old claw machine trying to calm his racing thoughts.

What did he mean by that?

Who was he?

Questions littered his already scrambled thoughts. He curled in on himself, his mind thought of George. His eyes flicked around the room, avoiding looking at the place where George lay peacefully.

"Dream?" A groggy voice said from a table in the room. The voice dripped with sleep, clearly awoken from an uncomfortable dream. Clay's head snapped up, locking eyes with the younger man. Alex looked like almost as much of a mess as Dream, sunken cheeks, messy hair covered by the same beanie he had never taken off since the two met, and dark bags under his eyes.

"Alex." Dream hear himself saying. He took a shakey breath in. Dream climbed out of the old claw machine and walked cautiously towards the tired man. His legs shook as he walked, but he chose to ignore it as he sat himself at a seat across the table from Alex.

"Dude, the fuck happened to you? You look like shit." Alex asked.

"You don't look much better y'know." Dream said, a short humorless chuckle escaped his lips.

"Eh, I'm fine. Your not though, what happened?" Alex asked once more, saying it more as a statement.

"Strange dream 's all, no big deal."

"Wanna talk about it?"

"Nah, just-" The rest of Dream's words went unspoken, and Alex couldn't help but be concerned for the older man.

"Alright man, I'm not gonna bother you about it. But get some sleep ok? If you wanna talk in the morning I'm all ears."

"Sure. Thanks, I really do appreciate it. And you too, you look like you haven't slept in a year."

They exchanged soft smiles as Dream returned to his claw machine and Alex layed his head in his arms.

The rest of the night, Clay went in and out of sleep, never once had he had a similar dream to the one that haunted his morning thoughts.

Dream was the first awake, and he was digging through expired foods and recipe books. He couldn't help but feel embarrassed because he had never payed attention to expiration dates until now, and had most definitely been eating decades old food. He dug through the entire fridge, finding nothing even remotely edible. He then moved on to the pantry, and began digging through old boxes of crackers and bags of chips.
