Steve Frog, Captain Toad

Summary: After a mission goes wrong, your captain is turned into an amphibian.

 "Avengers, Mr. Stark is requesting everyone's presence in Doctor Banner's lab immediately."

After JARVIS' warning, you and Wanda walk to the designated location, grumbling about the call getting in the way of the most important activity of your day aka cuddling on the couch while watching TV shows.

As soon as you arrive at the lab, you see Tony and Bruce facing one of the large tables, worried expressions on both their faces. A few seconds later, Pietro appears beside you.

"How come you have super speed and you get here after us?" You tease the blond, who shifts his weight between his feet awkwardly. "I was busy."

"You were playing video games." Wanda accuses, narrowing her eyes at her brother, and Pietro looks at her with an offended expression on his face. "Stop reading my mind!"

"I didn't, I'm your twin." Wanda replies, shrugging smugly, and you chuckle at the ensuing banter between the siblings.

"Guys," Tony interrupts after a while, "I think we have a more important situation here." The man with the goatee scolds, and the twins immediately fall silent, embarrassed postures from both of them.

"What's wrong, Tony?" Nat asks as soon as she walks into the room, greeting you silently afterwards. "Steve's a frog."

"It's a toad." You and Bruce speak at the same time and the man with the goatee rolls his eyes, irritated. "Whatever, he's not human!"

On the table, you see a large toad, the earthy brown color of its skin and intensely red eyes not at all pleasing to you and not at all reminiscent of your mentor. But the animal stares at each of you, and you wonder if it understands what you're saying.

"How did this happen?" Wanda asks, a mixture of concern and astonishment on her face as she watches the toad. "I don't know!" Tony replies, running his hands aggressively through his hair.

"We were talking on the comms and suddenly he stopped answering. When I went looking for him his clothes were lying on the floor and there was a frog among them." He explains, looking at the animal on the table. "A toa-"

"Whatever!" Tony interrupts you, angry, and Wanda immediately assumes a defensive stance, glaring at the man. You take her hand in yours to calm her down.

The brunette looks at you next, and you flash her a reassuring smile, to which she reciprocates with a brief one as she leans against you.

"Wait, hold on." Pietro says next and everyone looks at him. "You're saying that when he comes back he'll be naked?!"

"I don't wanna be here when it happens." You comment with a grimace and hear Wanda let out a low giggle next to you. Tony huffs. "We'll cover him with a towel."

"It'll have to be a big towel." Nat comments next and you look at her, the amused expressions of you and Pietro making the Black Widow blush. "Because he's tall!"

"Nicely done, Romanoff." The older Maximoff teases, and earns a slap from the redhead on the back of his head. You and Wanda giggle at the scene. But noticing Tony's displeased expression, you rush to ask, "What's the plan?"

"Well, first I have to find out what caused this. I'll need a sample of his blood and-" Bruce interrupts his own explanation when a laugh escapes your lips, even though you tried to avoid it.

"Sorry," you say amid laughter as you notice everyone's gaze on you, "I'm sorry, it's just- Cap's a wood frog."

"I thought you just said it was a toad." Tony retorts, confused, and you shake your head. "No, I mean... Steve is a wood frog. Wood frogs spend a great part of their lives frozen to protect themselves during winter. You know, actually frozen. Like Steve!"

"Oh my god." Pietro comments amidst laughter, Wanda laughing softly beside you as well. You nod, perking up at the theory building up in your head. "It's true! And these frogs are really small and tiny. And Steve also used to be really small and tiny-"

"Okay, that's enough." Tony says, louder than the twins' giggles. "The three of you, out. Now." He demands, pushing the three of you out of the lab. Even with all the protests of the three of you, soon the door is closed in your faces.

"For the record, I'll be calling him Captain Toad from now on." Pietro says amused as you all start walking and Wanda giggles. "He'll kill you."

"Only if he catches me." The boy declares and then sprints through the hallway, disappearing at the same instant. Wanda laughs once more, but noticing your quietness, she looks up at you.

"Hey," she calls softly, stopping walking and making you do the same, "you okay?" she asks, worried, and you sigh. "You think Tony's mad at me?"

"No!" Wanda answers immediately, bringing her hands to the sides of your face. "No, babe, of course not." She confirms, but noting that you're still hesitant to believe her, she adds, "He's just stressed that his boyfriend was turned into a toad, I'd be the same way if it were you."

"You could just kiss me and I'd come back." You joke and Wanda smiles broadly. "Like the princess and the frog?" She asks amused as you start walking again and you nod. "Yep."

"Life's not a Disney movie, Y/n/n." She says with a giggle and you giggle along. "I would kiss you if it was the other way around."

"Oh, would you?" she asks, a mix of amusement and disbelief in her voice, and you think for a few moments before answering. "Never mind, probably not." You finally decide, and Wanda lets out a chuckle, rolling her eyes. "You're an idiot."

"You love me though." You retort, lightly nudging her shoulder with yours. "Pretty much." Wanda replies, repeating your motion, and you smile broadly.

The brunette entwines her hand in yours then, and as you walk back to the complex's TV room, you feel your heart fill with joy.
