"Are you serious, barrister babu? Did you separate a couple from meeting and making love?", Arjun asked amidst laughing, "At this rate, how will you get married? Won't the curses of all these people work against you and prolong the period of your agnathavasam (life of anonymity)?"
His words brought me out of the laughing spell and made me stare at him in perplexity. I didn't get what he was exactly referring to. Reading my expressions, he explained, "I mean to say that you are leading a life of anonymity. This is not the real you it seems. There's an unmanageable gloom in your eyes that is hardly being hidden by your glasses. I have seen a photo of yours at my brother's house and what attracted me instantly was your smile, along with those sparkling eyes that shone out of happiness. It is quite evident that you are hiding your original self behind the mask of a serious barrister. Also it seems you are running away from reality.
For a long time I have been thinking, what is that you had a few years ago and not now? You have everything- money, education, a charming personality, age, a golden heart, power and what not, except a wife who would love you until her last breath.", his voice softened.
He further went on to say, "For the qualifications that you have, you will get the best match in the country. However, in order to welcome anyone, first you should open the doors of our heart. Besides, it's not that you don't like to get married. After all, you are a human being too, who longs for companionship. Yet, there is something else to the story which you're covering up with the mask of celibacy. Once you open the doors...."
He was still continuing but my steady footsteps cut his words. I went to the telephone to call Subbu. This Arjun was absolutely testing my patience. I got into a fix where I cannot shout at him or bear his torture. If a man is this irritating, who will give him a girl first of all? Instead of worrying about his own marriage, he came to interpret my life. I scoffed internally.
Even before Subbu could apprehend who was on the other side of the phone, I yelled, "Are you settling scores with me or something, for the actions from my previous birth? Or did I unknowingly hurt you in this life itself? Whom did you dump on my head, my enemy? Your cousin is so..."
"Relax, my friend. Arjun is too good, who deserves to be guided by you. Not only on the grounds of his academic history, but even in terms of character, he is the best. Since childhood, he has been an inquisitive kid who had lots of questions in mind, but no proper guide to answer. So, naturally he seems irritating to the people around. Please put up with him and let him settled down in life. His over involvement might be troubling you, but we can't help it, since that is his nature. It is how he is made. He cares about everyone around him, which is not a bad quality either, isn't it?", told Subbu.
"Alright, I will take care of him.", I assured and cut the call after conveying my regards to his family.
Subbu's words melted my heart. I realised that I was overreacting for no reason. When he mentioned about Arjun being an inquisitive kid, I remembered Bondita. Her head was a carton of questions. I chuckled. What would have happened to her little yet powerful head, if I was not there to answer her questions?
"Did you complain about me to my brother?", Arjun asked sadly, obstructing my flow of thoughts.
I nodded my head horizontally with a smile.
"Barrister babu, there it is. I have seen that same old smile. Well, how did it flash all of a sudden? Did you find something which you lost?"
I didn't have to find anything, as I haven't lost anything in the first place. Her memories were always there with me and will continue to be. Yet, I practised hard to keep them buried in the deepest layers of my heart.
