Mac kept still. "What are you talking about, Mrs. Jones?"

Marion unleashed her fury. "Edo! The Japanese intelligence officer! Edo of the Kempeitai? Edo who was at Nanking?! Indy did the massacre investigations there! He had nightmares for years! He said there was a pit of a thousand corpses... all women and children! Their bodies broken in monstrous ways. That's all he ever told me. He would wake up terrified and in a cold sweat. The bed was always soaked. Then he'd go downstairs and stare a thousand miles over a cold cup of coffee. And he never said a word."

Marion swallowed. "It was because of nightmares like that he and I went to Egypt to run the dig site where Em was nearly crushed. They seemed to be less of a problem in the field." She stared at Mac. "And after all that work Indy did to place him at the scene and make sure he was convicted... you let Edo walk free? We have baby girls! We have daughters! You know what he did to the women and children of Nanking - yet he's free and working with Indy now?!?"

Mac took a breath. "They're not exactly working together. I sent Edo after the Seven Swords of Diya... and then Doc Heiser showed up and... gave me some information and I... I realized I needed an archaeologist who knew the terrain and that was your husband and daughter. Along with one of our best smugglers, Wan Li, aka Shorty. Short Round."

"Shorty? The kid Indy adopted in Shanghai?!" Marion snarled at Mac. "You sent another baby to face off with that monster!?!"

"He's 35. And a Second World War veteran."

"I don't care!" Marion fumed. "Get them all home this instant! Except for Edo! He can get captured by the Soviets who actually killed the Nazis!"

"That's unfair, Mrs. Jones."

She stuck her finger in his face. "Don't talk to me about fair! Not when you have the entire file that convicts Edo of crimes worse than I can even speak of! Hungry ghosts of Holocaust victims and the women and children of Nanking are going to come after you, Mac! If half of what my father, Abner, believed is true... then a merciful God wouldn't listen to your last prayer because you purposefully denied justice to innocent victims!"

"I had no choice," Mac murmured.

"Coward!" Marion snarled. "COWARD!"
