Unseen Realm

Emily looked around her. She was no longer in Kamchatka.

Somehow the apkallu had pulled her into an ancient darkly ornate chamber, lit with lava and brimming with fear. And she was dressed in white... which either meant a wedding gown or a burial shroud. She wasn't certain which.

She looked around. "I know this palace. I saw in ruins. Unoccupied." She stared at the apkallu. "Mesopotamian... of course you would recreate the palaces of the kings of Babylon... and their feasts." She held the two swords even as she stood in front of an ancient banquet table in a dark stone built throne room. The apkallu sat at the head of the table on a shining obsidian throne.

"I am told humans need to eat," It motioned to the table filled with food from numerous cultures. "And you have not eaten in several days."

It drank from an ornate gold and silver cup with ancient writing on it.

Emily didn't let go of the swords. "That's Solomon's Temple's silverware. King Belshazzar of Babylon drank out of it and his kingdom fell."

"Are you not receptive to a fine wedding feast?" The apkallu asked tenderly. "You are a stunning bride."

"No one's getting married here," Emily countered.

The apkallu admired her form, its eyes embracing every curve. "Did you not listen to your Aunt Zipporah? Weddings are scared."

Emily braced herself against the invasive demeaning gaze as her skin crawled. "She said, 'marriage was sacred,'" Emily corrected. "Drop the illusion, apkallu. Your marriage was for abuse and enslavement of humanity."

"But don't you want to be my queen?"

Fury like lava filled Emily. "You rule over nothing. Shut up."
