Lizavet moved carefully around Emily's exposed back, pressing the poultice onto her wounds. She stopped and looked at Emily. "Why did you not tell me you were in your moon time?"

"Its not something that my culture did a lot with," Emily shrugged. "I bleed for seven days a month. During the summer its around full moon. During the winter - I never know. Just part of being female."

"It is... very important," Lizavet countered. "Shaman skills tie in with it. Papa is right, telling you to rest and care for yourself."

"Its a bother." Emily folded her jacket to rest on. "The reason I have this jacket is because I got tracked by an animal predator, while I was bleeding. The creature tried to kill me, but I killed it first." She swallowed. "You're not going to believe this... but it was a saber tooth tiger. They're supposed to be extinct."

"Emily, you will find many things in this land and in this world - do not fit with what your sciences would want you to believe."

Emily smiled. "Growing up chasing artifacts and ancient treasures with my dad kind of taught me that."

"But not the feminine things?"

"He tried. He sent me to charm school. That lasted less than two hours." she smiled through the pain. "Met my best female friend, Adrienne there. Dad always made sure there were intelligent professional women around to teach me. But..." Emily swallowed. "I could never be his son."

"I don't think he wanted a son," Lizavet answered.

"I just... I see him with Shorty... and I see him with my nephew, Tyler - wishing he could have that grandson and grandfather relationship - and I saw it some with my childhood best friend and almost older brother, Zev... and I... I feel like a failure, because I wasn't a boy." Emily looked at her body and pressed her hand against her lower stomach. "And then... when... when I get weak and start bleeding... even when I know its perfectly normal and in this case, healthy... I get to hear all the men from all the expeditions I've been on my entire life, complaining or making snide comments about how much of a bother I am, because I'm a girl."

"Are they right?" Lizavet asked softly.

"Right now... I'm too weak and fragile to tell."
