Emily gripped Lizavet's thrashing legs under one arm and started swimming diagonally for shore. Shorty followed, trying to hold Lizavet steady. She convulsed, throwing herself to the side, her head going under.
Shorty gripped her, pulling her up. "What about Dad?"
Emily glanced down the river. "Can't think about that!" She swallowed her fears at what she'd seen. Not even a hat.
Emily's feet hit the bottom and she dragged Lizavet onto the shore.
Shorty scrambled out of the water, feeling the horrific cold. He stared at Lizavet. "She's not breathing! What do we do?"
Emily stood up.
Downstream there was a quick flailing of brown.
"DAD!" Emily shoved her whip at Shorty. "Get Dad! I'll do CPR!"
