Kevin (POV)

"Woah. Woah. Woah," I said as I caught Alyssa. I called her name profusely as her body went limp in my arms. "Alyssa!" I turned off the emergency button. "Alyssa. Stay with me. Stay with me baby."

The elevator doors opened and I rushed out with Alyssa in my arms. "I need help," I yelled. "Can somebody help me please!"

"Sir," a nurse called out to me. "Sir! How can I help you?"

"Me and my fiance were on our way up here to see her father when she passed out. Can you help her please?"

"Okay sir. Calm down. Everything's gonna be fine. I'm gonna check and see if we have a room that we can put her in for now. Just bare with us, okay? We're going to do everything we can to help her."

I shook my head "okay." The nurse left me standing there with Alyssa in my arms. I was so worried. I silently prayed that she would be okay.

"Yo," Terrance questioned from a short distance behind me, "Kevin! What happened," he said running over to me. "I---I don't know. One minute she's standing in the elevator and the next she just passes out. A nurse is checking for an empty room now."

Terrance was so upset. "Damn! First dad and now her! This ain't fair man."

"Uh sir?"

I turned around. It was the nurse.

"We have a room for her. Follow me."

I was so grateful. Me and Terrance followed behind him. He led us to room 208 which was down the other end of the hall. I laid her down on the bed. There were other nurses their to check her out.

A doctor walked in. "Hello folks. Im Dr. Mackey." She looked at a chart. "The patient here is Alyssa James and you are," she said looking up at me.

"Hi. I'm Kevin. I'm Alyssa's fiancé. I was in the elevator with her when she passed out.

"Okay Kevin. I'm gonna need you to answer a few questions for me," she said.

I complied.

"Were you with her all day?"

"Yes."

"What did she eat today?"

"Uh. She had an apple and a breakfast sandwich from Panera. That's all she had."

"Have you noticed anything strange about her behavior at all today?"

"Yes. She threw up earlier. It was about ten minutes before we left to come to the hospital."

"And you told the nurse that she was on the way to see her dad. That's why she was in the elevator, correct?"

"Yes."

"Okay you can continue."

"Um. A few minutes after we arrived here, one of her older brothers told her and their siblings that their dad was still unresponsive. Almost immediately after that she started to look sick and took off for the nearest exit. Her sisters went to go check on her."

The doctor made a mental note of this. "Anything else you want to add?"

Before she got on the elevator she was talking to her mom in the waiting area. She seemed pretty upset when she left her. That's how I ended up in the elevator with her. I went to check on her.

"And are you two sexually active?"

"What does that have to do with anything," Terrance asked.

"I'm just covering all of the bases here," Dr. Mackey replied as she looked over a chart. "I have to rule out any common denominaters." She looked back up at Terrance. "Are you one of her brothers?"

"Yes."

"Ah. That's explains it." She gave her attention back to me. "Your response to the last question?"

"Yes we are sexually active."

"Kevin," I heard a weak voice say behind me. I rushed over to Alyssa. "Baby are you okay," I asked kissing her forehead. "What happened," she asked.

"You passed out in the elevator," Dr. Mackey interrupted. "Hello Ms. James. I'm Dr. Mackey and I will be taking care of you today."

Alyssa slowly looked up at her. "Wait. Slow down. I passed out," she said trying to sit up.

"I would advise that you just lay down. Don't try to do too much. You're still weak. A nurse will be in here shortly to give you some food. That should help get your vitals back up. We're also going to run some tests shortly and try to figure out what's going on here. I'll be back in an hour or so," Dr. Mackey said as she turned to leave.

"Thank you so much," Dr. Mackey," I said.

She nodded her head towards me. "You're welcome," she said as she left out.

Terrance spoke up. "Imma leave you two to it. I'm gonna go check on dad." He headed for the door.

"T," Alyssa called out. Terrance turned around. "Yeah Lys? What's up?"

"Do you mind not telling anyone about this? I don't want anyone to worry about me. I just want them to focus on dad."

"You got it," he said as he left out.

Once he left I gave my attention back to Alyssa. "Alyssa what happened between you and your mom," I asked her.

"I don't even know where to begin," she said with her eyes watering up, "but I'll start at the part where she told me that my dad is not my biological father." She wiped her eyes, "and that he has no idea."

"What," I said in shock. I squeezed her hand. "I am so sorry. Is there anything I can do to make this better?"

"I don't think so," she said through her tears.

I scooted into bed with her and wrapped my arms around her. "I just want to see my dad," she cried.

I assured her that after she was discharged we would go see him.
..
An hour after Alyssa ate, Dr. Mackey came back into the room.

"Okay Ms. James. I have your results. Sorry that took so long," she said looking up at Alyssa. "Are you ready?"

Alyssa pushed herself up and nodded her head. "Yes." She squeezed my hand.

"Ms. James you're three weeks pregnant." Dr. Mackey smiled between us. "Congratulations."

"What," Alyssa gasped. "That can't be right!"

"Baby. It's okay. We talked about having kids," I tried to reassure.

"Yeah I know. When we were married. We're a year away from our wedding Kevin. We aren't prepared for this." She looked genuinely worried.

"Here are your discharge papers," Dr. Mackey said as she reached over the bed and handed them to Alyssa. "You're free to go Ms. James."

Once Dr. Mackey left Alyssa got out of the bed and mumbled something incoherent about her mom and bad juju. "Baby can you slow down for a minute," I asked her as I grabbed her hand. "You passed out earlier. You need to take it slow," I said with concern.

She looked at me with tired eyes. "Kevin. Please. Can we do this later? This is a lot right now and I just want to see my dad." I nodded my head and let her hand go. "Okay baby. Sure."

"Thank you," she said quietly before turning away and walking to the door. I got up from the bed and followed behind her.
