The super-soldier brought a hand up to your face, causing you to look up. It surprised him how, over the course of three hours it seemed as if you'd transformed into a completely different person: the normally lively, sparkly look in your eyes was gone and was replaced by a dull, blank stare. Your typically steady hands that usually had a gun or katana in them were shaking violently.

He could practically feel his heart shatter into a thousand tiny pieces at the mere sight of your grief-loaded expression.

Steve brushed a stray tear that slipped down your face with his thumb, gently stroking your cheek.

"What if it doesn't work out?" you asked in a hoarse whisper with your throat feeling so tight that you could hardly swallow, constricted with more tears that threatened to fall. "what if it's never going to be okay again?"

First it was your cousin, then aunt and uncle, then friends, and now your mother. They took everything away from you---and you were sick and tired of going through it over and over and over, an endless hell that you were unable to escape from.

"I know it hurts, but it's going to get better. It just takes time, love," he soothed you with his smooth, calming voice. "You'll be okay."

"Dad, he's all I have left and I don't want to lose him... and Mom, she was...she keeps the family together...and I have nobody left back on Earth. This," you spread your arm out, gesturing to the ship and the other Avengers, "is all I have left now. I've lost friends and family because of this supposed 'revolution', and---"

"Shhh, it's okay, shh," he quieted you, smoothing your hair back and tucking stray locks behind your ears. "We'll do just fine, okay?"

"Okay," you whispered, resting your head back on his muscular chest, being able to feel his hot breath falling against your neck.

Then something, something you couldn't really make out, shifted. It was like a change, too small to notice if you didn't look carefully, but noticeable enough. The whole world seemed as if was holding its breath, watching as you were held in Steve's strong arms, as he comforted you.

Now's not the time for feelings, Y/N...especially not after this whole fiasco...

But even you, the most obedient person, let those thoughts go and instead, tried to stay in the moment. Your eyelashes, wet with tears, fluttered closed as you breathed in his scent, cologne with a hint of blackberries. A wave of comfort washed over you, and you sighed.

The moment was unfortunately interrupted when you heard a crunch from behind. You and Steve whipped around to see Drax, eating a potato chip.

"I am...invisible...Drax sees all..." The guy raised his eyebrows at Steve's arms around your waist, and yours tucked underneath your chest, leaning into him. "Oh. Sorry. Did I...interrupt something?"

"No, Drax, you're good," you replied, sniffing.

"Come on, we're about to make the jump. Get down here," he informed you, and you opened the hatch, stepping down to where the other Avengers were.

Buckling up, you wiped the remaining tears which dried on your face and adjusted your belt. Nobody dared to say a single word when they saw you come down, taking notice of your red, puffy eyes and flushed face. They looked from you, to Steve, then back to you. Tony smirked at you before realizing that you weren't in the mood, and quickly turned around to help Rocket pilot the jet.

Right now you were returning back home for a few days to take a quick rest and to prepare before coming back for the funeral service.

Dead.
