Insomnia was cruel. It kept you awake even when you were desperately wishing to get even just a wink of sleep, it would scare the living hell out of you by constantly plaguing your brain with nightmares that shook you to your core, leaving you shaking violently with chills running down your spine in fear.

You hadn't slept in days because you were afraid that if you drifted off and closed your eyes, those nightmares would come back to haunt you. Now, dark circles and bloodshot, red-rimmed eyes almost became a part of you, and when you looked in the mirror you weren't even surprised by your ghostly reflection staring back anymore. You were too worn out to care.

You'd just returned back from a mission in Brazil to stop the HYDRA agents that had made base in downtown Rio de Janeiro. It was mentally and physically exhausting, and you just wished you could forget the horrific details of the event, but you couldn't. And that was what followed you back to haunt you.

Even though you knew that you'd saved thousands of lives that day, you couldn't help but think about all the innocent lives that were lost, and those lives of agents that you'd taken. It didn't matter that they were bad---the guilt was weighing down heavily on your shoulders and you were stuck on what you were supposed to do.

You mindlessly wandered out to the kitchen area on the main floor of the compound, opening the fridge and grabbing an ice-cold bottle of water, chugging half of it down in a matter of only a few seconds. The water was freezing, but you couldn't care less, because it felt good against your throat that was raw after waking up screaming. It was a miracle that you hadn't woken anyone up but somehow, everyone was sleeping peacefully.

Deciding that trying to fall asleep again was your best bet as of right now, you headed back to your room, attempting to get some decent rest for once.

And that plan failed epically when you woke up in a cold sweat, screaming again.

You weren't sure of what to do so you wandered over to the room of the first person that popped into your head---Steve.

He opened the door as soon as you knocked, brows furrowing in concern when he saw the beads of sweat dotting your forehead and the worn-out, tired look in your bloodshot eyes.

"What's wrong?" he asked in a quiet voice, putting a hand on the small of your back and leading you inside before closing the door behind him.

"Can't sleep," you looked down at the ground, staring at your feet. "But it's nothing big."

"You woke up screaming, twice, and that doesn't sound like nothing to me. Seriously, Y/N, what happened?"

"Nightmare...it..." you trailed off on your sentence, rubbing your forehead. "I don't know."

"Do you want to stay here for the night?" he offered as he made his way back to the bed. "If you need to."

"Yeah...that'd be good," you nodded.

You silently crawled in and shifted until you were under the covers, laying your head down on the pillow next to his. It was awkward in the beginning because you weren't sure of what to do because you'd never been this close to him before but you curled up and found a comfortable position soon enough.

He suddenly pulled you towards him into his chest and wrapped an arm around your waist, his breath softly fanning over the back of your head. You felt your heart pick up speed at the physical contact but ignored it, letting out a tired sigh and shuffling closer to him.

You felt him smile against your hair, his grip around you tightening ever so slightly.

"You alright?"
