You'd been standing for nearly two hours now, but it wasn't tiring you even in the slightest; your entire body had already gone numb a while ago so you lost all feeling in your legs. As you were blankly staring down at your parents' graves, the one thing that kept running through your mind over and over was if there was something, anything, you could've done differently to change the outcomes of the situation so that they were still alive.

Maybe then, they'd be with you, standing by your side to guide you instead of buried six feet under.

"Hey, you alright?"

Steve's rather soothing voice jarred you from your thoughts and you looked up as he placed a hand on your shoulder, the look in his eyes speaking for him what the rest of his words couldn't explain.

"Yeah, I'm fine," you replied, your voice coming out in a hoarse whisper. "I'm okay."

"Seriously, Y/N, are you okay---" Steve began.

"I'm fine" you spoke softly, "don't worry about me."

An awkward tension quickly filled up the air around you before you spoke up again.

"Why are you here, Steve?" you finally asked after a moment, voice cracking on the last part of your question.

"I didn't want you to be alone," he stated calmly.

Several more minutes passed by as you stood side by side together in silence and nobody moved a single muscle. You silently reached for his hand and he took it without questioning, interlacing your fingers together and keeping a firm grip.

He could see the gleam of tears in your eyes and the trembling in your fingers, how you swallowed hard and blinked multiple times to stop yourself from crying but knew you were struggling to keep the act up. It was the glassy, almost lifeless look in your eyes that sent shivers running down his spine and he could feel his heart practically snap in two at your broken expression.

You shook your head when Steve met your gaze and he let out a sigh, before placing his hands on your hips and pulling you towards him.

His arms slowly snaked around your waist to hold you close to his chest and his grip on you tightened the more your body shook with sobs. You seemed so frail and fragile in that moment, and it made him sick to the stomach knowing that one of the strongest women he knew was breaking down before his eyes.
