You finished taking your shower and quickly dried yourself off, changing into one of Steve's oversized T-shirts which had somehow ended up into your laundry bin after you'd switched out your bandages. You were too lazy to change back once you did so though, and put a pair of sweatpants and headed back downstairs.

When you got to the kitchen, you saw Steve sitting at the island and gripping a mug of coffee in his hands.

Steve noticed that you'd entered, and you were shocked when he looked up at you with bloodshot, red-rimmed eyes heavily underlined with dark circles and eye bags. He seemed as if he hadn't gotten any sleep all week---even though it had been only a few hours since you'd gotten back.

He gave you a tight-lipped, sad smile before looking back down and downing the rest of his coffee in one gulp.

Strange, though. He was never one to drink black coffee; he despised it, if anything.

If he was drinking black coffee, straight, you knew it meant that there was something wrong or there was something that was bothering him.

"Steve?" you spoke softly. "Are you alright?"

"Could be doing better," he replied after a moment of hesitation, rubbing his forehead as he let out a long sigh. "Just tired."

"Something's bothering you," you looked over at him, pulling up a stool and sitting down in front of him so that he'd look up at you, meeting your gaze with his piercing blue eyes. "What's going on?"

"Y/N, you know what's going on."

"Steve, I'm sorry---"

"You almost died," he deadpanned, speaking in an emotionless and monotone voice. "How can I be okay after I almost lost you?"

"If I hadn't taken that bullet, you'd be dead, Steve, and if that did happen, then I'd have to live with the guilt that I was too late to save you for the rest of my life. I couldn't afford for you to die at the hands of that soldier."

"You don't understand," he said, "when I was watching the life slowly fading from your eyes, it was a race against time to get back here as fast as we could to save you. You don't understand how terrifying it was to go through that. You really don't."

"I was doing that to save you, Steve," you whispered, looking down at your feet. "I couldn't let you die."

"I almost lost you, Y/N," he stated quietly, running a hand through his hair.

You didn't say anything in response, feeling your words fall short as you felt your throat seize up with tears that were threatening to choke you and it suddenly became difficult to speak.

And the look on his face was enough to shatter your heart into what felt like a million pieces.

"I'm so sorry," you choked out. "I didn't mean to make you worried, I just didn't want you to die, I couldn't let that happen to you---"

"You really worried me out there, Y/N. You know that?"

"I know," you closed your eyes and felt the tears sliding down your cheeks, "I just care about you too much to let you die that way. I'm not going to let myself live with the burden that I was the reason that Captain America came to an end."

"And I'm not going to live with the burden that the one girl I cared about the most almost died getting in the way of a bullet that was meant for me."

Your breath hitched in your throat at his words and you stayed silent as you met his gaze again, his piercing blue eyes once again never failing to send a chill down your spine every time you looked at him.

You hesitated slightly before reaching for his hand, knotting your fingers with his and he rubbed his thumb against the back of your palm soothingly, and he stood up and stepped forward to embrace you. You froze for a moment, unknowing of how to react before resting your head in the crook of his neck and allowing him to snake his arms around his torso and hold you close to his muscular chest as you let your eyes flutter shut.

You tried your hardest to ignore your rapidly beating heart, that had quickly picked up speed when he pulled you to him.

"I almost lost you out there," Steve murmured into your hair as one hand pressed against the small of your back, and the other arm was still wrapped firmly around your waist to hold you close to him. "You scared the living daylights out of all of us."

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you, I had to do it, to save you, you know---"

"You could've died when you took that bullet, Y/N," he repeated. "I wouldn't be able to live with that."

"Why do you care so much?" you mumbled. "That's what I don't understand."

"I care about you too much to let you go so easily," he responded as he smoothed your hair back.

That was when you glanced back up at him again, cracking a small smile. "What? You care about me? I didn't know that."

"Of course I do," he scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Why wouldn't I?"

"I love you," you blurted suddenly and wrapped your arms around his waist, voice muffled when you buried your head back into his chest. "I'm sorry for acting reckless, Dorito."

"I love you too, you idiot," he smiled softly as he kissed the top of your forehead.

"FI! NA! LLY!" Clint whooped as he jumped around the corner with Sam, Pietro, Peter, and Bucky and all the others bursting into applause.

"You guys were watching this whole time?"

"Maybe...no..." Peter shrugged before pulling out a bag of caramel popcorn from behind his back. "...Okay, fine."

"My little sis finally scored a mans," Tony clutched a hand to his chest in pride, sighing wistfully.

"I can't wait for your guys' wedding!" Pietro, Wanda, and Peter squealed.

"Screw that. When Steven Jr. is born I call dibs on godfather," Bucky declared.

"NO! I will be the godfather! I am the rightful heir to the throne!" Sam argued, crossing his arms and glaring at him.

You sighed and shook your head, releasing yourself from Steve's embrace. "Clint, you can be the godfather. Nat, godmother. Since they're arguing like children and I'm not going to pick either of them for that reason."

"SO YOU GUYS ARE GOING TO GET MARRIED AND HAVE KIDS!" Peter and Pietro practically screamed, jumping up and down in delight.

"That's not what I meant---" you groaned, facepalming yourself.

"I'm still going to be the godfather, though."

"Clint!"

"Okay, okay."

"I'm best man at the wedding, though," Bucky announced.

"Fight me, Metal Man," Sam challenged, stepping up to him. "Square up, bro."

"Weaklings," Thor chuckled. "I can easily crush the two of you puny mortals. But of course, Lady Y/N and the Captain are worthy of holding Mjolnir, so I wouldn't mess with them."

You, Steve, and Thor exchanged fist-bumps.

"Y/N, sis, if you're so powerful, how did you manage to get shot again?" Tony raised an eyebrow at you, pointing towards your bandaged side.

"Trying to save this dork's life," you rolled your eyes, motioning over to where Steve stood besides you.

"And almost died," Steve added on, giving you the signature "Mom" look.

"Yeah, yeah, that too. Just be grateful you're still alive and not buried six feet under," you lightly swatted his shoulder before tiptoeing up to kiss his cheek. "And that I haven't killed you yet for all the other times you've almost died on other missions."

"And this is reason #102 on why I ship them together," Bruce grinned.

"I have to agree on that," Tony nodded, placing a hand on the scientist's shoulder. "We all do."
