jonah's pov

"you ready for bed sweetie?" i asked my eight year old daughter. she was sitting on the couch watching tv.

"yeah." she got up and we went to her bedroom. i helped her pull back the covers and picked her up, setting her in her bed. she giggled and grabbed all her favorite stuffed animals, setting them all around her then pulling the blankets over her.

"all set?"

"mhm."

"did you have a good birthday?" i asked.

"yeah." she smiled. i sighed.

"you look so much like your mom." i put my hand on her cheek. she giggled.

"you tell me that all he time."

"i know, because you do. your mom was so beautiful, and you are too."

"can we talk to mom tonight?" she asked.

"of course." i grabbed her hands and held them.

"hi mom," she started. "today was my eighth birthday. daddy bought me a bunch of new toys and uncle daniel took me to an aquarium. uncle zach bought me a bunch of candy, but he told me not to tell dad so keep that a secret." i opened my eyes and saw her smiling with her eyes closed. i leaned down and kissed her small hands.

"and lavender came over and we played barbies for a while. it was a good birthday. i just wish you could've been here, too. i love you mom." she opened her eyes and looked at me.

"your turn."

"hey y/n." i sighed. "i really missed you today. our little girl is growing up too fast, make her stop." i heard soft giggles. "she looks more and more like you everyday. she's gonna be an amazing young woman when she's older, just like her momma. i love you lots y/n."

"are you crying again?" my daughter asked. i opened my yes and sure enough tears spilled out. i softly chuckled.

"yeah, but it's okay." she climbed out from under her covers and wrapped her arms around my neck. i held her small body tightly.

"i miss her too daddy. but she heard us talking, i know it. and she says happy birthday to me and she called me her little angel like she used to. and she told you to be strong and make sure that you don't let me walk all over you because she knows how much you love me. and she said that she misses us and she loves us bunches."

"that does sound like her doesn't it?" i sighed.

"i have an idea."

"what's that?"

"let's sleep in your bed tonight. because i wanna cuddle."

"you love cuddling huh?"

"just like mom." i smiled and picked her up.

"wait! we have to bring my cuddle buddy." i chuckled and leaned down to grab her stuffed panda.

"ready to go chubs?" she asked. she made its head nod and i carried her to my room. i set her down on the bed and we both got underneath the covers. i put my arm around her small shoulders and kissed her head. she curled into my side and soon fell asleep.

i looked over at the picture frame on my bedside table, feeling my heart get heavy.

"why'd you have to go y/n?" i asked myself. i felt myself crying again.

"daddy don't cry, it's okay."

"oh, no i'm fine. it's okay, go back to sleep," i whispered. she climbed up onto my chest and lay her head on my shoulder.

"remember to be strong daddy."

my heart broke as i remembered the words she said to me in the hospital that day.

y/d/n was only four. y/n had been sick for a couple weeks and i finally convinced her to go see a doctor. only then did we find out that it was cancer. cancer that was too evolved to get rid of.

we had a few months with her. long, hard months where i cried a lot. but every time y/n was holding my hand and drying my tears.

"be strong my love. i need you to be there for y/d/n, you have to be strong for her, okay? i know this is hard, it's hard on me too. but she's the most important thing in our world now. you'll be okay without me, just make sure that you're strong for her."

i wrapped my arms around y/d/n and kissed her head. it was early, but all i wanted to do was sleep so y/n could visit me in my dreams.
