Around the Corner

Though with trembling hands, he knew what he had to do. Eyes were on him intently, from the left, from the right; people who shared his blood and people who did not share his faith. Draco could feel the tremble in his arm and he knew it assured them of his uncertainty; that he was not devoted whole-heartedly. But it was not really about devotion - it never was. It was about what one did, how one acted. It never matters what one internalises, it only matters how one communicates it their truth or their lies.

Yet, there was something different about this manner of fighting. This time, it was reckless. Uncertain, sure, but reckless. It was empty, careless. The purpose for fighting against such matters had died before his eyes, thus he shot from his wand at his own people from Hogwarts, at teachers, at students, with empty eyes, void of emotion and feeling.

"Do you reckon he's going to kill himself?" Harry asked, turning to you, looking down from the Astronomy Tower.

"I hope not."

"We should put someone on suicide watch. It was supposed to be Jack."

You finished sipping on your glass of water, placing the glass down onto the side, as you exhaled deeply. "It was." You looked momentarily at the fight scene, catching Draco's coldness. "But Jack's dead now."

"[F/n]."

"You're on suicide watch, then."

"Me? I'm going to be fighting."

"By the time you're out there, Draco will know we're alive and he won't need suicide watch. Until then, you're on it. Here you go, mate."

"What's this?" Harry paused, taking the box you had handed him.

"Invisibility cloak."

"For me? What about you?"

"Me?" You sighed, turning back down to the fight scene. "I'm off to fuck the final Horcrux." Your lips pursed. "I mean, fuck it up. Not actually fuck it, you know - "

"Yeah, I got that."

"Yeah, nice."

And off you went.

"But, [F/n] - " Harry called.

"Yes, mate?"

"If you're going, shouldn't you take it? You could get spotted and the news will get back to Voldemort."

"Mmm," you smiled gently, "no, I'll be quite alright."

With absolutely no desire to turn back around, you were off completely with your wand in one hand and the pen in the other hand. With the greatest focus that you, [F/n] Potter, could enforce, you focused intently, heightening your own senses as the skilled wizard you were, breathing steadily to hear any footsteps around, or smell any individuals approaching, or simply sense anyone near. You knew where you had to go, who you had to find.

Would Nagini have left Voldemort's side? Normally, you would have said no. There would be no way that Voldemort would risk leaving Nagini by herself. Now, however, the difference was that Voldemort was convinced that you and Harry were dead, therefore that himself and Nagini were not in danger. Consequently, it was no surprising conclusion that Nagini would be by herself. Somewhere off the grid. Somewhere on the side, by the hills. That was exactly where you went.

You successfully snuck past all the hallways and corridors of Hogwarts, heading straight for the back gate of Hogwarts where you hoped no one would be around. Praying to Merlin, even, something you had not done before. Perhaps you'd never internalised this wizard thing enough.

It was, nonetheless, as soon as you left the back gate that a Death Eater popped out of nowhere. He had been guarding that very door, ensuring no annoying little teenagers like yourself escaped. He was not happy when his eyes met yours, however.
