Slughorn placed the tea down before you as he continued to rummage through his own desk, sorting his own files as he spoke to you but did not regard you with his full attention. You believed he was doing this on purpose, for he feared to meet your eyes and talk directly of the matter. A part of him believed he knew why you were sitting here, or what you were going to ask about, but he nonetheless told himself that his subconscious was wrong, and that he wouldn't have to go back. The conversations between you and him up until now were casual, speaking of school matters or of friendship choices - he congratulated you on your work in Potions and said you are a very good student to teach. You sat in there for about twenty minutes discussing such random topics with him until the air felt easy enough to bring up your intention.

"So," you began with a smile, "you taught Tom Riddle, right?"

"I ... uh, yes I did. But I remember very little of it, you see, it was a long time ago."

"I see," you nodded, falsely taking in his information.

"But may I ask ... how do you know of him? Very little people know who Tom Riddle was, or is."

"We're best friends," you sighed, staring into your cup of tea, holding back any expression of manipulation or slyness before looking up at Slughorn slowly with a soft smile, "I believe I'm on the right track to defeat him."

"Defeat him?" Slughorn gasped. "Insane talk! You are seventeen years old, [F/n]! It's dangerous to even say such things."

"I know enough, Professor Slughorn, to be able to."

"Know enough? Such as what?" He pulled a ridiculous expression as he sat down on the other sofa opposite you, a tea in his hand, as he stared at you in shock at your confidence.

"Well, of course, I know where he's residing currently, as well as all the Death Eaters."

"And how could you possibly know that?"

"Because I know more than anyone thinks," you grinned, "I have connections, you see."

"Merlin, [F/n]! You are insane!"

"Heard that one before," you sighed, "but in order to truly defeat him, which I'm sure you also want, I need to know more about him. Him as a student, of course, and what he was like. Any weaknesses?"

"I don't think you understand the severity of the situation, [F/n]. He's not one you can just defeat!"

"I'm aware ... which is why I'm here, asking for help, and not just running in blind-eyed."

Your mind flashed back to running into the burning Burrow. Yes, perhaps sometimes you did run in blind-eyed, but you were attempting to be more strategic and controlling of your vehement emotions.

"I don't know much about him anyway. He was just ... a normal student that I taught. I barely acknowledged who he was. He was just like any other student. Charming and charismatic, of course."

"Oh, yes ... those looks really sold him," you grinned.

"How could you possibly know what he looks like?"

"I can let you in on a secret."

He paused, thinking over your proposal, and though sceptical, he finally nodded.

"I have been in the Chamber of Secrets. I met Tom there, or at least a memory of him, but we spoke and he tried to kill me. Of course, I'm [F/n] Potter, so I'm here still. I managed to defeat the Basilisk, and in that moment I realised the severity of Tom Riddle and Lord Voldemort. Over time, I've learned what he did to my family, to my parents and friends, who Death Eaters are and, well, now I know almost everything about them. But ... there's this one piece of information I'm missing. I know something's missing ... but I don't quite know what ... and I believe you may be able to tell me."
