"Wait, are you jealous?"

------------------------------------------------------

You & Evan were having a lovely picnic date together. The sun was bright, the sky was clear, & the weather was gorgeous. It wasn't too hot & a lovely breeze was blowing, making both of your hair fly in the air. Evan had his head in your lap, his eyes closed peacefully as you ran your hands through his messy curls.

It was days like this that really made you happy, when you were both calm & fully rested. You both had been under so much stress & had severe insomnia, which made it difficult for your relationship. Tensions were always brewing & stress bubbled over, causing a lot of stupid fights between you two; however, days like today were what made everything better & worth it.

You were especially worried about Evan, who's bags seemed to be getting larger as the days went by. Sometimes, you would wake up late in the evening & find him just staring at the ceiling. It worried you greatly, especially since he wouldn't tell you what the problem was. He rarely kept things from you, so seeing him struggle by himself & hiding it from you hurt a little.

But today, that wasn't on your mind.

What was on your mind was how the soft rays of the sun, coupled with your gentle & careful hands ruffling through his hair, was finally helping him sleep. He seemed happy & at peace for the first time in weeks & you couldn't be happier. His breathing was slow & even, his body limp & relaxed. You had packed a fairly big meal for the picnic that left you both feeling like stuffed turkeys & made him crash from the overload of carbohydrates. You, too, were also starting to get sleepy, but you willed yourself to stay awake so you could keep an eye on Evan.

You decided to keep yourself occupied with your camera, snapping pictures of the park. There was a lot of gorgeous scenery at this park, including a lovely lake, & the area you both were currently residing in had a vast overview of the entire park, giving you the perfect place to snap the most beautiful photos. Evan was still asleep in your lap as you took pictures of everything around you: trees, people, dogs, insects, & anything that you could see through your camera lens. You were so preoccupied with your picture taking that you didn't notice Evan waking up in your lap.

He watched you for a moment from his position in your lap before he gently sat up, pressing a kiss to your jaw. You squeaked in surprise & stopped taking pictures, looking at him, "Oh, good morning, Sleeping Beauty," you teased, making him snort.

"You're the beauty," he retorted, sitting up next to you. You looked him over, realizing that he looked as sad & tired as he always did. You frowned immensely, wishing that you could do something to make him happy. You had been working so hard to try & make him happy, taking days off work just to spend the day with him so he wasn't alone at the house, taking him out every Friday night to wherever he wanted to go, buying him unexpected gifts & giving them to him randomly throughout the week, & you even organized this picnic, but nothing was working. If you could just see that smile, just once after going weeks without it, you would be satisfied.

Evan dug through the picnic basket, grabbing a sandwich & unwrapping it. He ate it quietly, looking out at the park. He got distracted by something in the distance & didn't notice something was eating his sandwich until he felt it being tugged out of his hand, "Hey!" he turned towards the culprit, expecting to find a kid or maybe just some jerk, but instead, he found an adorable dog, munching away on his sandwich. He laughed, that smile you had been waiting for weeks to see appeared on his face effortlessly, "Hey there little fella. Where did you come from?" he began to stroke the dog's ear, its tail wagging happily as it barked in pleasure. Evan laughed as the dog slowly crawled into his lap, laying in it as he beckoned him for more stroking. Evan eagerly obliged, rubbing the dog's tummy. It was an incredibly adorable sight, but you couldn't help but feel a bit jealous. You had worked so hard to get one smile, just one, but it only took a little hungry dog to make him happy. You felt guilty for being jealous, but you couldn't help it. It just wasn't fair.

The remainder of your park stay consisted of Evan cuddling & petting the dog. You tried to keep your anger in check, not wanting to ruin Evan's happy mood. Eventually, as you packed up to leave, the dog's worried owner came over, excited that Evan had found their dog. He seemed a little sad about letting the dog go, but he reluctantly returned it to the owner before leaving with you. The car ride was silent & awkward, Evan oblivious to the anger that was boiling inside your veins. You were seething with rage, but he didn't have a clue. Were you not good enough? Was he tired of you? A million explanations as to why you couldn't make him happy flew through your mind for the duration of the short car ride, continuing to buzz angrily in your skull as the two of you grabbed your picnic supplies & went inside your small home.

You didn't want to start an argument, but you were honestly pissed off about this whole thing. So, you waited until you were both sat on the couch, Evan mindlessly flipping through channels, before you finally spoke up.

"Am I not good enough for you?"

Evan turned to look at you, shocked at the question that left your mouth, "I beg your pardon?"

You looked back at him, "Did you grow tired of me? Or did someone else catch your eye?"

He raised his eyebrows, "What the Hell are you talking about?"

"I tried everything, I did everything I could to try & make you feel better & smile, but none of it worked. I took days off, bought you gifts, took you out to the park, Hell, I even got you tickets to see your favorite band, but nothing worked. Then, today, some little lost dog was all it took to make you smile. I just don't get it!" you said, exasperated. Evan blinked, staring at you in shock as he absorbed what you were saying. It took him a while to answer, but once it all clicked, he smirked a bit.

"Wait, are you jealous? Of a dog?"

"Yes, I am jealous! I just wanted to make you happy & smile & nothing worked but then some dog just walks over to you & eats your sandwich that I spent all morning making & you carelessly grinned like you used to," you grumbled.

Evan burst out laughing, "Oh my God, honey," he tried to compose himself but to no avail. He just kept laughing, which only made you angrier.

"It's not funny, Evan, I'm serious! What did I do wrong?"

He eventually got himself together, still chuckling a bit as he grabbed your hands, "You didn't do anything wrong. All those things you did for me did make me happy & smile," he smiled as he pressed a hand to your cheek, "Spending all this time with you has made me the happiest guy in the world & I'm sorry I didn't show you that. I just figured you knew already."

"Really?" you asked.

He smiled & nodded, "Really; I love you so much, more than anyone & everything else in this world."

You smiled, blushing softly in embarrassment, "I love you, too. I'm sorry I got so jealous & pissy."

"Don't be. It's actually kind of cute when you're angry," he purred. You rolled your eyes. He laughed, pulling you into a hug. You could feel the happiness radiating from him & you returned his smile, the one you did anything & everything just to see again.
