"I think we need to talk."

"I think I'm in love with you & I'm terrified."

------------------------------------------------------

Evan stared out his window, watching your silhouette as it moved slowly & carelessly. You were dancing along to your favorite song as you cleaned your room. You had moved into the neighborhood a few months ago & had become friendly & fairly close to one of your neighbors: Evan. You had only talked a few times & hung out once or twice, yet you were both really close. He had saw you that first day you moved in, when he habitually looked out his window & saw that instead of his nice, elderly neighbor Mrs. Smith, you were there & he did a double take. For the next few days, he watched you move in, curiosity burning strongly within him. He eventually got enough courage to go over to your house & say hello. The smile that spread across your face when he stood in front of you & offered a shy greeting, made his heart race rapidly, & he knew right then & there that he was a complete goner.

After that day, you talked almost every morning when he went to grab his mail & you were sitting on your porch, drinking tea & watching the sun rise. It was always just a few "hello"s here & there, but to him, it meant a lot more. He thought about you & his interactions with you a lot, even while he was at work. He still occasionally watched you from his window, but at respectable times, like when you were reading or cleaning, never while you were showering or undressing. And as he continued to think about you & watch you from time to time, his feelings for you continued to grow.

The first time you two officially hung out, he had came over to welcome you to the neighborhood. He had baked an awful batch of brownies that were severely overcooked & dry, making you smile at his futile efforts. You invited him inside, where you two chatted for well over an hour, trying to devour the hard as rock brownies. You both had a lovely time & enjoyed each other's company. That one interaction made Evan become infatuated with you to the point where no matter where he was or what he was doing, all he could think about was you.

Now, as he sat down on his couch, watching you dance & clean, his thoughts were still about you. He had been contemplating his strong feelings about you for the past week or so, trying to figure out exactly what he was feeling. In all honesty, he was scared. He had no clue how you felt about him, but he guessed you didn't feel as strongly about him.

Meanwhile, as you were cleaning, you couldn't stop thinking about Evan. His light brown, curly hair & how much you wanted to run your fingers through it. His dark brown doe eyes that always had a little sparkle in them. His dashing smile & how it could light up a whole room. His dimples & how cute they were on him. You had fallen from him hard these past few months, but you were too scared of rejection to say anything.

Evan, on the other hand, was terrified of being in love. His last relationship ended badly & left him severely wounded. He was scared to put himself out there & be vulnerable again, yet, he really wanted it. He wanted you to know how he felt & to possibly reciprocate those feelings, but he wasn't sure if he would ever gather up the courage to tell you how he felt.

You stood up after turning off your vacuum, peering out the window. Your eyes met Evan's & you smiled, waving to him. He blushed, embarrassed that he had been caught, but waved back at you. Your smile widened & you made a gesture with your finger, ushering him to come over. It took him a moment to recollect himself & nod, gently getting up from his couch. You immediately put the vacuum away & fixed yourself up a bit before the doorbell rang. You practically ran to the door & swung it open. Evan smiled at you when your eyes met his, "Hi," he said shyly.

You returned his smile, "Hey," you replied, stepping out of the way to let him in. He walked past you & into the living room, "You thirsty? I made some lemonade earlier."

"I'd love some, thank you," he followed you into the kitchen & sat at the small table as you got out two glasses, filling them with fresh lemonade. You handed a glass to him & sat down, sipping your own glass. Cleaning all day made you incredibly thirsty, so you chugged nearly the entire glass on the first sip. Evan tried not laugh as he sipped his own glass, cracking a smile as he did so. You realized he was looking at you & you cracked a smile back. You looked at each other for some time, not speaking. It was a comfortable silence & neither of you felt awkward about it, but Evan needed to tell you how he felt. He just couldn't hold it in anymore, "I...I think we need to talk."

Your heart started to beat faster as you wondered what he wanted to talk about, but you just nodded, "Do you want to talk in the living room?" he nodded & you both went into the living room, sitting next to each other on your couch. You turned so you were facing him & waited for him to initiate the conversation.

He took a deep breath, avoiding your eyes before he finally spoke, "I think I'm in love with you...& I'm terrified," your heart stopped & you just stared at him. So, you both did share the same feelings & fear, "I can't stop thinking about you & everything reminds me of you. I have difficulty focusing at work because all my mind does is focus on you. I'm not good at relationships or being around people in general, & my experience is minimal. My last relationship ended badly & it took a part of me that I don't think I'll get back," he looked at you sadly, "I think I do love you & that I want something between us, but I'm so scared & I don't know if my ready."

You smiled & grabbed his hand, squeezing it softly, "I feel the same way about you, Evan," he couldn't help but smile at that, "I was in a nasty relationship, too. He fell out of love with me & I realized that I never even loved him in tbe first place, but it still hurt. It was like my heart was yanked out of my chest. I was numb for over a year, but when I saw you, it was like my heart never left. It would flutter when I thought about you & just about explode in my chest whenever I saw you or talked to you," you laughed a little, "You make me feel so alive after being dead for so long, & that's what scares me. If you could make me feel better so quickly, who knows how quickly it would take you to hurt me."

He frowned & grabbed your other hand, "I swear to you, I would never, ever hurt you. All I want to do is see you smile & hear you laugh everyday & be the reason for it."

You smiled, "You already are," his heart fluttered at that, causing him to smile widely.

He laughed softly, "God, the things you do to me," you laughed with him in agreement. Another comfortable silence settled between you once more, but Evan was quick to break it, "So, what happens next?"

"I suppose we wait, until both of us are strong enough & healed enough," you smiled, "but until then, we can still be great friends & good neighbors."

He nodded, agreeing, "Sounds good," he sighed as he looked at his watch, getting up, "I've got to go shoot some scenes today, but I'll be back later this evening," he walked towards the door, biting his lip before turning back to look at you, "Would you mind if I got some take out on the way back & brought it over?"

You grinned, "No, I wouldn't mind at all. I would love if you did that, in fact."

His smile brightened, "Good," he turned back towards the door & you opened it for him.

Just as he walked out, you quickly said, "Evan, wait!" he immediately turned around & you walked upto him, standing on your tiptoes as you leaned up & kissed his cheek. It was soft & warm, just like his heart. You pulled back & grinned, "I'll see you later tonight," he nodded, a huge grin plastered on his face. You went back inside & waved to him as he walked back to his place before closing the door. You pressed your back against it & sighed contentedly, closing your eyes in order to recall the feeling of his cheek & your lips against it.

Evan didn't stop smiling the whole duration of filming, & his smile only widened when he showed up on your doorstep later that night with two containers of Chinese food.
