REQUESTED: Could you do a drabble about Evan's character from Safelight, Charles?
------------------------------------------------------
When the bell finally rang, signaling the end of class, you shot out of your seat, eager to get home.
"Wait! Just a minute," your teacher, Mr. Sullivan said, causing you & a couple of other students to groan & begrudgingly return to your seats, "I just wanted to let you know about this photography contest," he held up a stack of flyers as he spoke, "You're all welcome to enter & I will be offering extra credit to everyone who participates, regardless of whether you win or not," you grinned. Photography & extra credit? Two of your favorite things wrapped up in one. Why wouldn't you do it?
"Alright, now class is dismissed," everyone bounced out of their seats & ran out the door, aside from you & a few other students who stayed behind to grab a flyer. You picked one up & looked it over, wondering what you were going to snap pictures of.
Suddenly, you found yourself thinking about Charles, the sweet, quiet boy who sat next to you in Sullivan's class. You two weren't exactly really close friends, but you talked from time to time, enough to know that he did a lot of photography in his free time & loved it.
You looked around the room, but Charles was nowhere to be found. You grabbed an extra flyer for him, just in case he left before Sullivan announced the contest, & stuffed it in your bag. You wondered if Charles would want to be partners with you for this contest & a thousand different ideas began swarming through your mind that you hoped Charles would at least consider. You would love to work with him & learn from him & hoped that maybe he could learn something from you, too.
You began walking off campus & towards the dirt pathway that was an isolated shortcut to your home. It wasn't the safest of routes, per se, in regards to all the rocks, ditches, & inclines, but it was quiet & free of interruption, which was something you enjoyed.
Needless to say, when you saw Charles walking several feet in front of you, you had to stop & do a double take, just to be sure it was really him. Why would he walk down this way? It certainly wasn't good for his leg & it definitely wasn't good for him. In fact, it was incredibly dangerous. The risk of a fall or serious injury was too high & there was no doubt Charles knew that. He wasn't the reckless type; he was always so cautious & careful. He knew better than to do something so dangerous & stupid.
"Charles!" you called out to him, but he kept walking, as if he hadn't heard you, "Charles!" you tried again, but still, no response. You sighed & began walking once more, trying to catch up.
You didn't get very far before you stopped again, spotting a group of assholes from your school approaching Charles. Your heart started beating faster as you watched the altercation, hoping they wouldn't hurt him.
"Hey, Gimp!" one of them shouted. Charles tried to pick up the pace, but it only made him stumble over himself, "Whoa, slow down!" the guy laughed, him & his group of assholes closing in on Charles. You immediately set out in a sprint, desperate to catch up to them & stop the abuse you knew was going to ensue.
You watched in horror as they started shoving Charles around, pushing him to the ground. His camera fell out of his bag & the big asshole bent down to pick it up, "Well, what do we have here?"
"Stop!" you yelled, "Get the Hell away from him!" everyone, including Charles, stopped what they were doing & turned to look at you as you rushed over to the group & stood beside them. You glared at the bullies, your hands balling up into fists at your side, "Leave him alone," you hissed, glaring at the main asshole who started the abuse.
