Jamie

"Mommy." Lani mumbled into my shirt.

I placed my fingers in her dark brown curls and lightly started to detangled them. "Yes, Lani?"

"I miss daddy." She whined.

I sighed. Here we go again. "I know you miss him, Lani. You need to get adapted to life out here because you're not seeing daddy anymore."

"But I miss him so much. Why did we leave? Can I talk to him on the phone?"

"Lani, no!"

"Mommy, please!" She said, starting to tear up.

Seeing my little girl cry breaks my heart but I refuse to let her see Chresanto anymore. When she's older she'll realize how much of a dog her dad really is.

"Lani, stop crying, baby. Mommy is gonna let you talk to daddy, okay?"

"Right now?"

"Yes, Lani." I mumbled. I pulled out my phone and waited for it to turn on. Chresanto has been blowing up my phone nonstop since I left him with Lani. He really must've thought that I wasn't going to leave him.

"Go wait in the living room." I told Lani.

I blocked my number and dialed Chresanto's number. Once it got to the fifth ring, I was about to hang up but then I heard Chresanto's deep, raspy voice in the phone.

"Hello?"

I cleared my throat. "Chresanto."

"Jamie!? Is that you!?" Chresanto yelled.

I covered my left ear and held the phone down from my face. "Yes, Chresanto."

"Where are you? Matter fact where's my daughter?"

"Don't worry about it," I snapped. "I can't be having my daughter around that bitch Brielle trying to play mommy. Me and my daughter are fine that's all you need to worry about."

"Jamie why do you have to be so fucking petty? Just bring Lani home! You can stay your ass wherever the fuck you are! Don't make me bring the police in this."

"Would you like to speak to Lani? I'm only giving you five minutes so you better make it quick."

"Pass the phone to Lani." He growled.

"Lani! Daddy is on the phone!"

I never in my life saw Lani run so fast in the short years of life that she had. I pressed the speaker button while she turned a deep red color; probably excited to hear Chresanto's voice.

"Daddy! This is Lani!" Lani hollered into the phone.

"Hi baby girl! Daddy misses you so much!"

"I miss you more, daddy. I wanna come home!"

"I want you to come home too, princess," he sighed." But for now you have to stay with mommy, okay? I'll try to get you home as soon as possible."

"Okay," she mumbled into the phone. "Daddy can you call me everyday?"

"If mommy lets me call you I'll call you every single chance that I get, okay?"

"Okay, I love you, daddy!"

"I love you too, Lani. Stay good for daddy! Let me talk to mommy."

"Go in the living room," I told Lani. I closed the door after her and snickered. "What, Chresanto?"

"Jamie, I'm done playing fucking games with yo' ass! Bring my motherfuckin' child home!"

"Salty or nah?" I said, giggling. "The tables have turned on you now. Maybe if you worried about loving me and not Brielle this wouldn't be happening to you."

"What part of I don't love you don't you understand!? I can't stand you!"

"Wasn't saying that when you were head first all up in my vagina cheating on Brielle!"

"I was in fucking high school! You were a fuck and duck! Did you really think I would fuck with you like that? You're still in high school!"

"Whatever, Chresanto. I'll call you tomorrow to talk to Lani. Goodbye."

I hung up the phone and made my way down the staircase into the living room. My cousins Lauren and Megan were sitting down on the couch with their twin boyfriends Zach and Jaylen or something like that.

"Where's Lani?" I asked.

"In the kitchen." Lauren responded, snuggling with her boyfriend. I rolled my eyes and stepped into the kitchen. My aunt Diane was preparing cookie batter with Lani.

"Hey, auntie." I said, bending down to give my aunt a kiss. She was a petite, short, white woman who didn't look a day over thirty years old. You would think that she's one of those conservative elderly white women at first glance but once you get to know her, she's the exact opposite.

"Hey, Hun! Decided to wake up?"

I chuckled. "Yeah, Lani woke me up wanting to speak to her father."

"I don't know why you don't stop being petty and let that child go on with her daddy."

"I'm not being petty, auntie!" I whined.

"Yes you are, Jamie! That boy ain't done nothing to you!"

"He never gave a fuck about me, auntie. All he ever did was play with my heart! If he can't be in a relationship with me then he's not seeing my daughter! I carried her for nine months and went through a painful labor to bring her here!"

"You're as dingy as that damn mother of yours! Always chasin' these boys that don't want you! Let him go! There's plenty of boys for you! Chresanto ain't the only one!"

"But he's the one that I want!"

"Get over him," She said sternly. "You need to really think about the decisions you make as a mother."

"And I am," I mumbled. "I'm doing the best for me and my child."

Chresanto

"Who was that on the phone?" Brielle asked, sitting next to me.

"Jamie." I mumbled.

"Oh my gosh, is Lani alright where is she?!"

"She won't even let me see my own child," I mumbled, feeling the tears run down my cheek. "This hurts so much."

"Oh, Chresanto," Brielle said, pulling my face from out of my hands and holding me in a tight hug. "I know you're hurting right now. I wish I can make everything better."

"You just being here is enough. Thank you so much."

"Anytime, Chresanto. Did she tell you why she took Lani away?"

"Because she doesn't want you playing the mommy role for Lani. She already knows about my feelings for you."

"So this is my fault?"

"Brielle-"

"No, Chresanto. It's my fault that you're baby girl isn't here with you. I know how much Lani means the world to you."

"It's not your fault, it's just Jamie being petty."

She sighed and looked down at the floor. I tilted her head up and looked her in the eyes as she looked at me. My eyes inched down to her lips and she did the same. Right when I was about to kiss her, she turned her head and my lips landed on her cheek.

"I'm sorry, Chresanto but I can't do this, especially not to Christopher." She whispered.

I closed my eyes and held onto her hand. "Brielle."

"Yes?"

"D-Do you still have feelings for me?"

"I'm not sure, Chresanto," She replied." Don't be down, Chresanto. Just give me time, okay? I just don't know right now."

"I'll try to give you as much time as you need, Brielle but I can't make any promises."
