Chapter 44

-1 Month Later-

"Tobias!" I shouted. "How do you put this thing together?"

We had bought the crib yesterday and now I was trying to figure out how to build it. A few days ago, we had moved into our new apartment, which was coincidentally right across from Will and Christina's new one.

When Tobias walked in he smiled. I was sitting in the middle of the floor, all of the crib parts spread out around me. He picked up the box and tipped it upside down; directions dropped onto the floor. Tobias crouched down and grabbed them.

"Maybe if you read the directions, you would know." He teased, waving the instructions in front of my face.

I snatched the paper from his hand and grumbled, "Tris Eaton doesn't need directions."

Tobias chuckled and kissed my cheek, causing me to push him away. He put on a fake frown. "Are your pregnancy hormones acting up?"

This made me glare. "As a matter of fact they are, and if you don't be careful, they'll get a lot worse." I snapped.

His expression softened, his deep blue eyes full of understanding and care. "Let me do this." He insisted. "How about you and Christina go shopping for baby clothes?"

"No!" I said immediately. "I am not going shopping with Christina. She's going to make me buy clothes for myself." Trying on the too-tight outfits Christina picked out for me wasn't high on my list of priorities. "I'll help you with this." I gestured towards the various pieces that surrounded me.

"All right," he settled.

-Two Hours Later-

"We did it!" I celebrated. "We finally finished that impossible contraption!"

Tobias whooped and gave me a high-five. I swear they made that crib for geniuses to make. We had to take it apart three times because there were parts in the wrong spots; but it's not our fault because some of the parts were almost exactly the same.

"Who thought it would that difficult to make a crib?"

"Well, it's finished, so let's move it to the corner so we don't have the chance to break it." I suggested. Tobias nodded and took a side. Together, we slid the crib over to its designated destination. I turned and looked at the unfinished room. Only one wall was painted a light blue, an assortment of boxes and paint cans scattered around. Tobias wrapped his strong arms around me.

"What are you thinking?" he whispered.

"It's actually happening." I said quietly. "We're actually having a baby. I never thought we would."

"That's what I had wanted to talk about," Tobias said. "You know, before you got attacked by Peter. I wouldn't tell you, but I was going to ask if you ever wanted children."

"I know." I told him. "I had figured it out."

"How?" he asked.

"It doesn't matter." I said.

"Well, would you? Have wanted children even if you hadn't gotten pregnant?"

I didn't answer right away. "No," I eventually said. "I never wanted children. At least, I thought that I didn't."

"Neither did I." he told me, but I already knew that. "But looking back on that now, it seems silly."

"Yeah," I replied, but I wasn't exactly sure if I meant it. Part of me still wishes that I hadn't gotten pregnant. I was usually able to squash that down, but now it felt like the thought was branded on my forehead.

Tobias kissed my jawline. "I love you so much." He said softly.

"I love you too." I whispered back, turning around so I could kiss him. My body was as close as it could be to his, but I wanted it to be closer. The kiss deepened and Tobias picked me up brought me into the bedroom. His hand was at my hip and his lips were still connected to mine.

The only reason we broke apart was because of a sharp pain in my stomach. I jumped, mainly in surprise.

"What's wrong?" Tobias said instantly, his hands now at his sides. He was no longer bent over me, but standing straight up, looking at me as if I was dying.

"Just a cramp," I assured him. "It's from my abdomen getting bigger. The doctor told us this last week Tobias. I'm just fine."

His posture relaxed slightly. "Are you sure? You're only four months pregnant. Isn't it a bit early for this to be happening?"

I brushed my fingers along his cheek reassuringly. "It's perfectly normal. I promise."

Tobias still looked unsure, but he didn't press it. He slid onto the bed next to and pressed his lips to my forehead. "It's only five," he informed me. "Too early for bed."

"No it's not." I protested. "Five is the perfect time for bed."

-Page Break-

That night, nightmares invaded my mind. The pain I had felt the previous night, had been magnified greatly, but this time, it wasn't because my abdomen was growing. I woke up in a cold sweat.

Tobias was still next to me when I woke up, so it must've been the middle of the night. I slipped out of bed and quietly walked to the kitchen. My hands, cold and clammy, were shaking so bad I could barely hold my glass of water. I knew sleep wouldn't come back to me so I sat at the counter, waiting for time to trickle by. My fingers wound themselves into my dirty blonde hair, twisting the strands into a braid. Once I ran out of hair, I unwound it and started over. The repetitiveness of my actions made time seem to go by even slower.

My eyes flitted to the clock. 5:27. I could wake up Tobias. He would have to get up in a half hour anyways so he could get ready for work.

Once I was back in the bedroom, I crept to Tobias' side and gently shook his shoulder. "Tobias." I whispered. "Tobias."

His eyes fluttered. "Tris?" He said once he was awake. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing," I said as evenly as I could. "I just couldn't sleep. And you need to get up in a little bit anyways."

"Are you having nightmares again?" he asked softly.

I reluctantly nodded my head. "I thought they had gone away, but I had one last night."

Tobias was standing up now, his arms wrapped around me protectively. "It's alright. You're fine now." He said into my hair.

Since my head was buried in his shoulder, he wouldn't have heard me even if I had responded.

"Why don't you hang out with Christina today?" he suggested. "No shopping, just quality girl time. You two haven't had a lot of that lately. I don't want you to be alone today."

"Yeah." I agreed. "Girl time. Sounds fun."
