Chapter 45

I stood in the hallway, waiting for Christina to come and open her door. She didn't know that we were girl time today, but she was about to find out.

"Hello?" she said groggily as she opened the door.

"Hey," I said quietly.

"Tris. What are you doing here?" she asked.

"Tobias suggested that we have some girl time today." I told her. Her eyes brightened a little.

"Does that mean-"

"No." I cut her off swiftly. "We are not going shopping. The two of us are going to sit in your apartment and talk. And eat."

Christina smiled at me and allowed my entry. As I situated myself on the couch, she went into the bedroom and woke Will. I could hear them silently conversing.

"But why do I have to leave?" Will was arguing.

"Because Tris and I are having a girl's day. And you are not a girl." Christina pressed.

"Fine," Will grumbled. A few minutes later he was walking out of the apartment looking a bit irritated.

Once her husband had left, Christina settled down on the opposite end of the couch. Her long legs were extended and she rubbed her belly absentmindedly. She was too much farther along than I was but she was a bigger by a decent amount. There was a smile plastered on her face.

"How far along are you?" I asked. I had a guess, but I wasn't completely sure.

"Almost six months." She answered. "Three more months and Grayson will be here." Her smile grew wider as she thought about it. Then she looked over at me for the first time since she had sat down. "What about you?"

I answered immediately. I had seen the doctor last week and he told me an approximate. "About four and a half." As I said that, it was like there was a tiny tap inside of my stomach. It kind of startled me, but since I couldn't find an explanation, I just shrugged it off.

"Are you and Four seriously waiting to find out if your baby's a boy or a girl?" Christina asked me.

"Yes." I said. "We have a little bet going on. If it's a boy, I get to name him. If it's a girl, he gets to name her. Waiting just makes the outcome more desirable."

"Will and I couldn't stand waiting. He thought it was illogical and I just thought it was stupid." She said bluntly. I suppressed a laugh. Even after four years, Christina still hasn't been able to get rid of her Candor side. Then again, I haven't been able to get rid of my status of Divergent; not that I want to though.

Once again, I felt the tap. I was genuinely puzzled at what this could possibly be.

There was silence for a while. I was tracing my fingers along my stomach and Christina was rubbing her hands in circles on hers. At one point, when the tap happened for a third time, I shifted uncomfortably. Christina looked up at me, her eyes narrowed.

"What is wrong with you?" she demanded.

"What do you mean?"

She gave me an incredulous look. "You've been shooting awkward glances at your stomach since you got here. Then, before you moved, obviously uncomfortably, you did it again. Tris, is something wrong?"

I hesitated be answering, not entirely sure of how to go about this. I didn't know if this tapping was a bad or not. "Nothing's wrong." I tried to sound convincing. "I've just been feeling this… tapping. Almost like a flutter on the inside of my stomach. I'm not sure what it is."

Christina let out a laugh and I was confused. What was she laughing about? Did that mean this thing that was happening was not bad but, indeed, a good thing?

Once her little outburst was over and she had composed herself, Christina began to speak. "Tris you know absolutely nothing about pregnancy!"

"I do too!" I protested. "If you must know, I have learned a lot of things about the subject. Go ahead, quiz me."

"All right," she said. "When will your baby first start to kick?"

I stared at her in a bit of shock. Kicking? That's what this was? My baby was kicking?

"Exactly." Christina had begun to laugh again. "Now you see why I doubt you."

But I had barely heard her. Instead, I was trying to wrap my brain around this. It seemed hard to believe that this tiny life inside of me, only four and a half months in the making, was kicking. Of course I have heard of this phenomenon, but this is a first for me. I realized how precious this was. This was a like a bond between mother and child that is only understood if it is happening to you. The father can feel it, but not internally. They are not the one being kicked.

I placed one hand on my bump, gently sliding it around. Sure enough, the baby kicked again.

Suddenly I was standing up and heading towards the door.

"Where are you going?" Christina asked, surprised at my sudden movement.

"To see Four!" I yelled over my shoulder.

"Wait!" Christina insisted. "I want to see his reaction."

I stopped just outside the doorway and waited for Christina to heave herself to her feet and waddle her way over here. It wouldn't be long until I started to waddle to.

Together, we made our way to the control room. I didn't bother with knocking and just barged in. Tobias, who was staring intently at the screen in front of him, jumped and turned towards us.

He stood up immediately. "Tris! What are you doing here?" he demanded.

I said nothing. My hand reached out for his as I crossed the room. I brought his hand to my stomach without removing my eyes from his.

"Tris, what are you-" He had stopped short. Tobias had felt it. I knew it because he was no longer looking at me, but at my belly. His face shone with amazement and wonder and even a little fear. He moved his other hand to my stomach as well, as if he was desperate to feel the movement again. He beamed when he felt it again.

When he brought his face up to look at me, he had the biggest smile on. I had never seen him smile like that before. Tobias then did something that he had never done before. He got down on his knees, ran his long, slender fingers along my stomach, and kissed it. He's talked to my belly before, but never has he kissed it. Soon, my whole stomach had been peppered with kisses.

Tobias rose to his feet and pressed his lips to mine. It was soft and filled with endless love. He pulled me closer to him and whispered into my hair, "I love you so much."

"I love you too." I told him. I don't think I have ever meant it more than I did right then. Perhaps, once, on our wedding day, but right now, my heart felt like it would burst. I loved the man before me so much it hurt.

We stayed that way for a while, until I remembered that Christina was still in the room. Reluctantly, I pulled myself out of his embrace.

"I'm going to back to Christina's." I said.

"Let me just feel it one more time. One more time before you go." He insisted. I smiled at him and brought his hands to my bump once more. It didn't take long. It was as if the baby could sense its father's desperation to feel him or her move. It was amazing.

"I'll see you at home." I said. He was basically glowing as he nodded at me, the smile still stuck on his beautiful face.

Once we were out of the control room, Christina gave a dramatic sigh. "That was so cute!" she exclaimed.

I couldn't help but smile. "I know."
