Lydia White

October 1st

Cody has a work event tonight that he's been begging me to go to for about two weeks now.

His argument was that I haven't met his colleagues and that it was an excuse for me to wear something fancy.

I didn't want to go, but I'll do it for him.

He works as a business consultant for a really big company in the city. His dad is the owner, but Cody earned his position.

I begged Eliza to come with me, but she couldn't find a babysitter. But, she did take me shopping yesterday to find something to wear.

I settled on a floor length, sleeveless, tight fitting black gown. The dress code was formal, and this dress followed that. It was a beautiful dress, and although I felt uncomfortable in it, I did feel pretty at the same time.

I had a shift today. It ends at 8, which gives me an hour to go home and get ready.

I have to take a cab to the event, because Cody will have to get there early and he won't be able to pick me up.

Work wasn't that busy tonight. The odd few customers would come in, and I spent most of the night stamping book covers and organizing shelves.

When I finally got off, I started to walk home. It was chilly, but not unbearable.

I tried to move fast because, even though it was a short walk, I was a woman walking alone at night and an easy target.

My apartment was in sight now, but I had uneasy feeling in my stomach.

It was like I was being watched...or followed.

I haven't had any rocks thrown at my window for 6 nights now, yet I felt totally unsafe.

So I ran. And I didn't stop until I was inside.

I spent the next hour getting ready for the event.

My hair was in loose curls. I wore silver hoop earrings that Cody bought for me, along with silver heels. The dress fit like a glove.

Honestly, I wasn't excited for tonight, but dressing up made it a little better.

One awkwardly quiet taxi ride later, I arrived at the event, which was being held in a reception hall that ty rented out.

I walk into the hall, immediately being met by men and women in suits and dresses conversing and drinking.

Cody's eyes met mine from across the room. He was chatting with two other men, holding a glass of something in his hand.

He lights up when he sees me, and gestures the two men to follow him.

"There she is!" he beams, walking towards me and pulling me under his shoulder.

"Gentlemen, this is my girlfriend, Lydia White."

The two-quite business looking men-both direct their eyes on me.

I stood very short beneath them, feeling smaller than ever.

"Hello, Miss." one of the men says.

I simply smile and wave.

"I'll be back with you two in a moment." Cody says to the men, waving them off as they walk away.

He then turns to me and looks me u and down, smiling.

"You look amazing." he says.

"So do you." I look up at him and smile, adjusting his black tie slightly.
