– I forgot my sunglasses in the office. I'll be right back – said Can, opening the car door for Sanem.

On Monday morning they registered for a wedding on Friday. It was going to be held at 1 pm in the marriage office. 15 minutes, in and out. Then a dinner with the family and by the nightfall they will have sailed away towards the unknown. Sanem was excited more for that part then the wedding. Wedding was just one day – she was dreaming of a lifetime.

She was sitting in the car for a couple of minutes, listening to "Gamzelim", when her phone rang. She loved that song; it brought back happy memories, so she was tempted to let the caller leave a message. But one look at the screen changed her mind – it was a call from abroad.

– Hello?

– Am I speaking to miss Aydın? – Female voice asked.

– Yes.

– My name is Luciana Rossi. I'm calling in the name of Premio Internazionale Città di Venezia committee. We have not received your RSVP. Will you be attending the awards gala? Have you not gotten our letter from last month?

Sanem felt a blush coming onto her cheeks. She was so preoccupied that she barely noticed Can opening the door and getting inside. He said something, but she put her finger on his lips to keep him quiet.

– I have. I'm sorry I didn't respond. I had some personal problems and it completely slipped my mind. Can you remind me when is the gala? – She tried to stifle a laugh when Can grabbed her hand and nibbled on her finger. – If you don't mind, I will write you back in a while. I need to discuss this with my... Uhm... With my husband. – Can smiled and kissed her hand. He liked the sound of these words. In less than a week they will be married and the whole world will know he's the luckiest man alive. – OK, thank you. Have a good day. – She disconnected and smiled.

– Are you hungry? – He asked.

– Very.

– Good. You will tell me all about this phone call over breakfast.

They bought fish sandwiches from a food truck at the seafront and sat on one of the benches. The day was warm and seagulls were making a lot of noise, as usual. Even now a few of them circled over Can and Sanem, expecting something to eat. Birds learn fast where they can find food. Any other day Sanem would've shared, but right now she was too hungry. She skipped breakfast at home, because she was too excited about the wedding. Can's sandwich was still untouched. Instead of eating he was just looking at her with a satisfied grin on his face.

– So this woman, Luciana, called to ask if I'll attend the awards gala. – Said Sanem, her mouth full. – They send me a letter and an invitation a few weeks back. You were in coma, so I just set it aside and forgot about it, but apparently I won a Grand Prix for best foreign debut novel. – She took another bite.

– And the gala is in Venice? – He reached out and removed a crumble from her lips.

– Yes. On the 16th.

– Then we'll go. – A seagull landed right in front of them and seemed to be waiting for its share of bread. Sanem gave up and threw it a piece. A moment later six more birds appeared.

– Really? We'll go to Venice? – Sanem was excited. Can nodded and she hugged him tightly. – Thank you.

– I didn't see you receive any other award, so I'm not missing this one. – Sanem let go of him and sat back.

– I've never gone to any gala before. This will be my first.

A dog came out of nowhere and jumped right in the middle of the group of birds patiently waiting for the next piece of bread. Loud barking scared them and for a moment they found themselves in the white, feathery chaos.
