People keep looking at me weird.
A few of the football boys have said a couple things but I guess being the football coaches daughter has some perks.
"Hey Lex," Camilla says
Cami is my secret girlfriend
I'm gay, haven't told my moms yet.
Or anyone else, I'm just scared.
She's Latina, a little bit of a bad girl. But she's super sweet and we've been friends forever
"Hey C,"
"How are you feeling? I heard everything that happened,"
"I'm alright, no ones saying anything cause they're scared of my mom and uncles,"
"And your brother, I heard he went at him,"
"Yes, TJ is grounded now,"
"Why?" She laughs
"My moms don't like him beating people up,"
She walks me to Spanish and I sigh.
"I don't know if you feel this way, but I really didn't mean to cheat on you,"
"You're my girl Topaz," she winks "I know you okay?"
I laugh and tell her I'll see her at lunch.
She's a cheerleader so we're meeting up to look at the football/final cheer lists.
I sit through two boring classes and then meet Cami at our spot.
"Hey babe," she says seeing me coming
"Hey,"
"Did you go out for quarterback again?"
"Yep, senior quarterback,"
"Well, lets go see- shall we?"
I laugh and nod
We see the group of people celebrating and push through to see the lists.
Starting QB: Alexis Topaz
Yes oh my god.
"You?" I ask
"Captain,"
"Congratulations,"
"You too QB,"
I haven't played in freshman or sophomore year since I wasn't really interested but I really wanted to play this year.
"Thank you,"
"Wanna go to mine for lunch?"
"Sure,"
We leave and she drives to her house.
"Finally we're alone," she giggles kissing me
"I'm sorry we have to keep it quiet," I sigh
"Hey baby, it's alright. Maybe if you're thinking about it- just come out to your moms first- there's no way they'll be against it,"
"Maybe I will,"
"We're kinda like your moms Yknow?"
"How so?"
"Head cheerleader, starting QB? Classic love story," she jokes
"I guess we are," I sigh
We eat and then cuddle on the couch for the last little bit we have.
"Someone's calling you," she says
I pick up my phone and sigh
"It's my mom,"
I pick it up and sigh
"Hey Mama,"
"Hey Lexi, where are you? I haven't seen you all day?"
"Oh I went to Camis house for lunch,"
"Oh ok, you saw the list right?"
"I did, I'm super excited,"
"Good, be nice to your brother and cousins tonight- it's their first practice and they're super nervous,"
"Always mama,"
"Awesome, thanks lex- see you at practice,"
"See ya,"
I hang up and cuddle into Cami.
"She just wanted me to be nice to TJ, LJ, and AJ,"
"Nervous?"
"This is what they've wanted since they were kids, but ya they are,"
"What mom was that?"
"Toni,"
"Where's Cheryl?"
"Probably business meetings or something like that," I laugh "or convincing Mia to stay in school,"
"Isn't she in grade 9?"
"8, she skipped a bunch and is always bored,"
"Must be nice,"
We go back to school and sit at a vacant table for the last 10 minutes.
A bunch of football guys come over and sit down.
"Are you as good as your mom?" Someone asks
"No ones ever going to be as good as her- but she taught me,"
"What about your brother and the other two?"
"They're really good," cami says "I've been watching them since they were little,"
"What do they play?"
"TJ is a wide receiver, LJ is a cornerback and AJ is a running back,"
"What happened between you and Quintipacki?"
"He assaulted me last week,"
"Fuck I told that guy to calm down," Troy says "sorry Lex,"
"It's alright,"
I go to my last classes and then to football.
"Mom?" I ask going into her office
"Hey Lex, what's going on?"
"Where do I change?"
"The football locker room, there's an area that you can change and still be around the team,"
"Thank you,"
I go and change and then warmup with my cousins
"Where's TJ?" I ask
"Bathroom," AJ says
"Has anyone bothered you?" LJ asks
"Nope, all good,"
"Good,"
Practice is fine and my mom pulls me aside after
"You're doing really well lex,"
"Thanks,"
"You're going to be home right? Like I'm driving you?"
"Ya, I just need to grab something from my locker,"
She nods and I change and go to my locker.
"You were amazing today," Cami says
"Ya? I thought I was a bit distracted by the head cheerleader,"
"You're funny,"
"I'm going to talk to my moms tonight, maybe you can come over for dinner?"
"Ya, my dads out of town so I'm home alone,"
"Okay, I'll call you,"
"Sounds good,"
She looks around before kissing my cheek and heading out.
Her parents are divorced- never met her mom and her dad is a travelling salesman.
I get in the car and Toni drives home
"Mom, can I talk to you and Mommy in the kitchen?"
"Of course Lexi,"
"Hey babygirl," Cheryl says as I walk in
"Hey mom, I needed to talk to you guys,"
"Of course, let me just finish this email..." she says still typing "..and done,"
She shuts her lap top and smiles at me
"What's going on?"
"I just wanted to tell you guys that I have a girlfriend, a-and I'm gay,"
"Awwwwwe," Cheryl says
"Who is it?" Toni asks
"Camilla Romero,"
"Who?" Cheryl asks Toni
"Cheer captain, Latina, she's been over a couple times... you thought she had a crush on TJ,"
"Ohhhh Camilla- yes I remember, very nice girl," Cheryl says "you took after your mother too,"
"How so?" Toni challenges
"Head cheerleader?"
"True enough, how long have you guys been dating?"
"2 months,"
We talk about it for a while until TJ comes down.
"What's going on?" He asks "you all look serious.."
"Oh I'm dating Cami, that's all,"
"Cool, moms can I go to uncle reggies house for dinner? AJ said Auntie Liz can pick me up,"
"Sure honey,"
"Oh and I was wondering if Cami can come over for dinner, um, her dad is out of town so she's home alone,"
"No mom?" Toni asks
"Never knew her, her parents divorced when she was 2 months old,"
"Of course she can come over, do I need to drive her?"
"She has her licence and her dad bought her a car,"
"Okay, tel her were having pizza,"
I nod and go up to my room to call her
"Hey baby," she says picking up right away
"Hey Cami," I giggle
"So.. how did it go?"
"They are fine,"
"I told you,"
"I know, I know," I laugh "you wanna come over for pizza?"
"Yes please," she says
There's a pause and I get concerned
"Baby.. is everything okay?"
"There's a guy trying to get into my car,"
"Is it locked?"
"Ya of course.. but... fuck,"
"What's wrong?"
"He saw me up here,"
"I'll drive down with my moms," I say getting up
"Uhhh, babe actually I'll be okay. Just stay at your house okay?"
"What's going on babe?"
"It looks like my cousin, he's just psycho but he's not dangerous- I'll be at your house in fifteen?"
"Oh, okay- sounds good,"
She hangs up and Mia and KC come in.
"We heard you got a girlfriend," KC says
"I did,"
"I already knew that," Mia says
"Mia, you don't know anything,"
"I saw you guys kissing a few weeks ago at the pier,"
"You're a psycho,"
"Still smarter than you,"
"Don't embarrass me tonight please,"
"Ooh yay I get to meet her," KC says
"Yes you do, until you embarrass me,"
They laugh and we talk about how schools going and everything until Camilla calls me.
"Hey Cam,"
"Hey I'm outside,"
I say I'll be right down and put my shoes on.
"Hey babe," she says kissing me
"Hey, you could've just come to the door,"
"I didn't know if anyone was sleeping,"
I hug her and she kisses the side of my head
"I'm proud of you baby,"
"Thank you,"
"Truly, it takes strength,"
"KC is super excited to meet you,"
"she's adopted?" She asks
"Ya,"
"Cool,"
We go inside and I start to get nervous.
"Lex, look at me," she laughs putting her hands on my jawline "you're alright, okay? I know most of your siblings and I talk to your mom everyday,"
"When?" I laugh
"When I skip Mr. Reese's class,"
Mr Reese is a creep.
I laugh and she kisses my forehead.
"You're cute," she says
"You're cuter,"
I walk with her into the kitchen and my moms stop talking.
"Moms, you know Cami,"
"Hey," cami says
"So nice to see you again," Cheryl says
Toni just smirks at her and stands up
"Mom stop," I warn
"Stop what honey?"
"Tell her to stop," I say to Cheryl
"Tones cut it out, you aren't even intimidating,"
"Imma head out, pick up some friends," she says
"Toni Topaz so help me- I'll take your leg and hide it if you are going to get her uncles- leave the girls alone,"
They start bickering and I say we're going to my room.
"Open door lex,"
"Yes mom,"
We go upstairs and I show her my room, since we usually hang at hers.
"Are you Cami?" KC asks walking in
"Kaylee!" I say angrily
"Huh?" Cami asks "you have another sister?"
"It's KC actually- only Lexi calls me Kaylee and only when she's mad,"
"Because it's your name you little shit,"
"I'll tell moms,"
I sigh and glare at her
"Go away K,"
"No, you said I get to meet her,"
"You're annoying me, leave me the hell alone,"
"Fine, bye cami,"
"Bye KC,"
She leaves and I sit on my bed.
"You should be nicer," Cami teases
"Try living with her and Mia- they're so annoying,"
"Who's annoying?" TJ asks
"Mia and KC,"
"Oh ya they're the worst," he jokes "you coming with me?"
"No we're eating dinner with moms,"
"Lexi," AJ says "hot girl I don't know,"
"I'm Camilla,"
"Cute name,"
"She's my girlfriend AJ, back off,"
"Shitty, wait Camilla Romero?"
"Ya why?"
"You're cheer captain?"
"That'd be me,"
"Wanna help me out with some cheerleaders?"
"AJ, be a fuck boy on your own time- bye bye,"
They laugh and leave.
"Cousin?"
"Yep, Reggies kid,"
"Makes sense, I heard he was a fuck boy in high school,"
We laugh and look at Instagram on our phones
My mom texts me that dinners ready and we get to the dining room before everyone else
I finally get a good look at her face since she had been hiding it since she got here
"Baby what happened to your face," I say rubbing my fingers down the marks that look like rug burn.
"Nothing Lex, don't worry about it,"
I go to say something else but my moms come in so we sit down.
"Do you have any siblings Camilla?" Cheryl asks
"I had a brother, but he passed away... 2 years ago now? He was TJ's age,"
"I'm so sorry," Toni says
"I'm alright,"
"Now that Alexis can't kick me out- I'm KC,"
"Nice to meet you,"
"Lex you did what?"
"Kaylee was being annoying mom,"
"Why do you call her Kaylee?"
"It's her real name, Kaylee Cameron," I say
"Okay- Alexis Jayla,"
"KC shut up?"
We all laugh and then cami and I watch a show before I walk her to her car.
"I had a really nice time," she says leaning me against the hood of her car
"I'm sorry my family is crazy,"
"Hey, everyone needs a little crazy and it was really fun,"
"Are you ready to come out at school?" I ask
"I'm already out babe,  everyone knows I'm Bi," she laughs "are you ready?"
"Yes I am,"
"Then I'll see you at your locker first thing tomorrow?"
"Okay,"
She kisses me lightly and then gets in her car
"Text me when you get home?"
"Don't worry about me Topaz," she winks
