Death Valley, California was recorded as the hottest place in America because it reached temperatures of 134 degrees. The average temperature for a sauna is 150 degrees. If you sit in 150 degrees for long enough you could lose up to five pounds in water weight. Death Valley was my dream place to live because think of how many pounds you could burn just sitting outside of your house every day.
Happy Valley had an average temperature of 48.8 degrees and it wasn't cutting it. I couldn't just sit outside every day and lose weight. It was unfair.
Happy Valley—the happiest college campus on earth. State College, Pennsylvania—home to The Pennsylvania State University held a population of 42,000 people.
That number is filled with thousands of diverse people. Different ethnicities, different nationalities, different eye colors, different brothers, different sisters, different schools, different names, different stories.
That 40,000 people also held thousands of different body shapes and types. In the state of Pennslyvania, the obesity rate for white women is 25.4 %. Pennslyvania is ranked number 22 out of the 50 states ranked most to least overweight states in America.
I dreamed of being a girl in Death Valley, California.
3.4% is the reason why I'm at Happy Valley.
New York City.
The place where every skinny girl wants to go to in hopes of becoming the next big model for the fashion week. The place where buying jeans from target isn't enough.
And the place where if you order a Splenda instead of Stevia—you might as well go to hell.
Pepperoni on your pizza in New York City? No way. Margarita Pizza is only acceptable.
If you aren't a double zero in jeans then you're considered fat.
The rules are different in a city that thrives off of being skinny.
There is a 3.4% difference in obesity rates in women between Pennsylvania and New York City. As much as I dreamed of being a Death Valley girl, I needed to go to college. I needed to get out of the mentality that my fathers had paid people to try to get me out of.
Penn State University looked like the best place to go—hot guys, hot girls, and a 3.4% difference in obesity so I'd look skinner to people.
And because it was called Happy Valley maybe it meant I would finally meet people that would make me feel or seem happy.
I've never been New York skinny and for people that have eating disorders–being skinny was what you craved for dinner.
I had been in recovery since the ninth-grade year of High School. There was a reason as to why I was the way I am. I wanted more than anything in the whole world to look like the women in the magazines. I wanted more than anything for my dads to not question me when I didn't eat with them at the table because the saying 'I'm not hungry' only lasts for so long.
