It is still the night of the Eclipse, although the event has long since passed.
It is now 3am.
I'm staring in at the cell, through a protective screen.
Onyx has been lying lifelessly on the cell floor, until his Pulse Organ repairs – and he finally sits up, looking around at the walls.
I expect a slow, furious realisation to consume him.
Instead, Onyx immediately starts to panic, moving to each wall, looking for a way out – huffing and puffing and breathing heavily.
I have a small window of opportunity to deal with Onyx alone, while the rest of Lycan Control celebrate in Dire Wolf HQ.
Carmen went home.
I stayed to tie up a few loose ends. This was it.
A demonic roar echoes from the cell – a chilling sound that breaks through the walls. No. Actually, it is a howl, not a roar – it takes me a second to realise he's calling for help from family.
Something about Onyx' raised head and skittish eyes, evokes pity within me.
I cave in and press the intercom button so that he may hear my voice.
"Onyx," the moment I say his name he freezes, "It's me. Silvia."
I let that sink in, and I watch him slowly turn toward the mirror separating us.
Impenetrable. Built to withstand and repel Lycans. I can see him, he can't see me.
"Why have you done this to me?" Onyx stares right at me, sensing where I stand.
I hear his voice through the speakers, although the static finds it difficult to translate his voice.
"I didn't want to be your slave, Onyx," I state, "I wanted to be better than my lust," Onyx slowly tilts his head, seemingly amused – but he says nothing. This irritates me, so I add on impulse, "B-but why did you mark Carmen?" Damn it, I stuttered.
"Insurance," Onyx speaks back to me, as he walks around the perimeter, "In case the worst was to happen. I suspected you would do something very stupid. I was right."
"Insurance?" I murmur.
"The mark – it will make you mine but it will make her crazy. It is the mark of mates, and exclusively belongs on our breeding partners."
"It's been 4 years since our first encounter. We are not mates," I state, "And Carmen is fine."
"Oh, she won't be," Onyx turns back to the mirrored wall, "...and neither will you..."
"You're not being released from this prison!""Come in here and tell me that, little pup," Onyx dares me, with a charming tone, "Face me."
That. Though. It is a command.
One that has me backing up a few steps and turning toward the door.
Uncontrollably.
Until I suddenly regain my senses and stop.
What the hell was that?
I compose myself, and then I walk out anyway and I walk to his door.
I see the shadow of him standing on the other side.
"Even with the door open you cannot cross over, it's designed to allow us to enter with you and keep you contained," I speak, knowing he can hear me. I press my hand to the door as I ask, "But why would I face you? Why should I? We... we can't be mates..."
