Rain

That bloody rain.

This was not how her day was supposed to go. Perhaps, if it hadn’t been the sixth bad day in a row, she would have kept her cool. But this was not the case, and she felt like a complete and utter idiot walking in what was starting to look like a storm without any sort of protection to shield her face from the rain, but she found the weather rather fitting considering her current emotional state, so she had let the water trickle down her hair.

She had started making her way towards Hogsmeade a few minutes earlier, and if she had left with Mary that morning like she had meant to, she wouldn’t have been forced to face this weather. The thing is, Lily liked to be punctual, and she rarely went to bed late. But a week’s worth of sleep deprivation had caught up to her, and she had slept in.

When she woke up that morning, she had found a note on Mary’s bed ‒ which was already made up ‒ addressed to her.

Sorry if I didn’t wake you up, but you looked so peaceful! It looks like it’s going to rain so I’m heading there now, but you and Marlene (she needs to finish her DADA essay first) can join me for lunch at the Three Broomsticks.

Lily got dressed and, knowing she wouldn’t find breakfast in the Great Hall, decided to go for one of the Sugar Quills she kept in the drawer, only to remember that she had eaten the last one the previous afternoon.

Great, now I’ll have to walk for twenty minutes on an empty stomach, she thought.

Once she was ready, she descended into the common room to look for Marlene. It only took her a few moments, as the room was half empty, and she found her friend behind a stack of books, sitting at a desk near the window.

“Mar!” she called out as she walked up to her.

“Can’t talk.”

She was taken aback by her curt reply, but decided she wouldn’t press it further. “Mary said we could go to Hogsmeade together once you were done.”

“Well, I’m not. Still got a page and a half to write and I’m currently stuck.”

“I could help—”

“No use. But hey, you should go anyway! I’ll have lunch here.”

Lily looked uncertain. “Are you sure?”

Marlene nodded. “Positive. Bring me something from Honeydukes, though. Your pick.”

Lily agreed and waved her friend goodbye, and set off for the village.

When she stepped outside, she felt grateful to herself for remembering to bring her scarf: the strong wind was unpleasant on her face, but her neck was covered and that, perhaps, was the only silver lining of her morning so far.

She had begun walking, and had just passed the main entrance gates when she felt a drop of rain on her cheek, and then another, and in less than a minute the rain had become so insistent that she could no longer ignore it.

“Ugh! Fuck! This fucking rain!” She said to no one in particular, as she tried to comb through her long locks with her fingers, though in vain. Her bangs were sticking to her forehead and she regretted not braiding her hair that day, as the wind and the rain had tangled it beyond repair.

A shuffling of feet, and then a voice, a familiar one. “Alright, Evans?”

She turned to face him, his long legs closing the distance between them in a matter of seconds.
