In which you fell in love in winter

Listen to: I Want You - Stephen Sanchez

You zipped up your jacket even higher, keeping your arms close to your body. You watched as your breath turned into fog. It was even colder than you imagined. You were going out with Maddie, at least, that's what you were told. Maddie had told you to meet her at the mall, wanting to get some more Christmas shopping in. You looked at your phone with the text saying where to meet her. It was getting pretty dark out.

"Y/n!" You turned to see Maddie walking up to you. You smiled, holding out your arms to hug her. She pulled you in, you returned the hug with a small laugh. You shivered as the two of you pulled away.

"Can we go in? I'm freezing." You muttered, feeling your cheeks go numb. She nodded, heading inside, with you following. "Holy fuck, I didn't think it was that cold out."

Maddie just laughed at you. "I told you it was absolutely freezing." You shook your head, smiling and unzipping your jacket. "I asked Jenna to come along, is that okay?" You shrugged at your friend.

"Doesn't matter to me, I just need to get a few more things." You knew Jenna, she was really kind to you, and you may or may not have a small crush on her.

Jenna was a really sweet girl, she has great humor, often times a little dark, but it always put a smile on your face. You both would tease each other, a small banter. You wouldn't see her often but when you did, she always managed to make you blush and flutter.

To say you were happy to see her was an understatement.

It was also an understatement to say you had a small crush on her. It's not small, at all.

"Y/n, Maddie, hey!" Speak of the devil. You turned to see the girl that you were just thinking about. You smiled at her, waving.

"How are you?" You asked, immediately starting a conversation. You and Jenna started to catch up, walking around, not noticing Maddie had left the two of you to talk. A store caught your eye as the two of you passed by, making you pause. Jenna stopped immediately.

"Are you okay?" She asked, trying to figure out if you were looking at someone inside the bookstore or the bookstore.

You blinked, looking at Jenna. "Yeah, I just remembered I need something from in there." You started to walk towards the store, but you turned to face the shorter girl. "You can come with me if you want." She followed behind you, like a lost puppy, watching as you scanned the aisles for a book.

You remembered from your last run-in with Jenna from a few weeks ago that she wanted to get. "What book are you looking for?" Your eyes widened, you paused your search.

"Not too sure, my sister mentioned a book, so I'm just looking for whatever sounds familiar." You lied, smiling at her. She looked at you suspiciously before shrugging it off. You laughed and shook your head. "Come on." You nudged your head, heading into the next aisle. She let out a giggle and followed behind you, looking at the books intently.

You saw the book, you stopped, Jenna bumped into you. You let out a small grunt, holding onto the girl so that she doesn't fall. "Sorry." She muttered, cheeks slightly flushed. You smiled at her.

"It's okay." You looked at the book again, picking up the copy. You observed the cover, it wasn't the original cover, like you wanted, but it looked interesting. You hadn't read The Count of Monte Cristo, but you planned on it.  "What's your opinion on reading books that are annotated?"
