Prompt: Birthday

----------------------

Kuroo on normal days is already annoying. But Kuroo on his birthday? He's insufferable.

"Yamamoto! What are you doing! Chase the ball don't expect it to magically come to you!"

Yamamoto grimaced. "Sorry!"

"Lev! What happened to those training you did with Yaku?! Did you forgot about them last night? Just because you're tall doesn't mean you can let the ball pass when it's shorter than your head!"

Lev shrieked, "But I managed to caught it last minute!"

"I don't care!" The captain shouted again, "dive properly!"

Yaku watched the scene from sideway, standing beside a nervous looking Kai. They both have their drinks. "This can't actually happen."

"You're acting as if you don't know Kuroo," Kai said, "should've known this would happen."

"Let's pray the first and second years can handle it until afternoon practice," Yaku mumbled, "let's also hope Kuroo doesn't get more annoying."

"Well that's kinda impossible, especially if we're looking at the situation now." Kai couldn't help but feel sorry when this time Kuroo decide to focus his attention to Kenma, their setter and Kuroo's childhood friend and point out how he should practice properly.

"Kenma toss it higher!"

Kenma seems to realize that he's being watched, because he soon avert his attention to Kai as if asking for help. Kai mouth 'sorry' and smile.

Truth is, today is the one day Kuroo shouldn't be this hard on the first and second years practice. The third years get it easy and is currently watching from outside the court but Kuroo keep barking orders to underclassmen. Well, Kai thinks, his mood won't get this bad if Yaku didn't think it would be fun if the whole team pretend they forgot what day it was. Kai silently facepalm when Yaku look like he enjoy it.

"You're enjoying this too much."

"Oh, I do," the libero said, "I love watching Kuroo agitated, especially if he makes Yamamoto and Lev suffer in the process."

"Say, Kai," Kai turns his attention to Coach Nekomata, who shares the same face expression as he does, "does Kuroo shouting like crazy has anything to do with the fact today is his birthday and I haven't heard any of you say anything about it?"

Kai grimace, "Something like that."

"Coach, be nice and play along, please." Kai hears Yaku say behind him.

Kai sigh in exasperation. Great, their captain 18th birthday and let's pretend no one remembers it. Way to go.

---

Kuroo's mood stay sour the whole day. His mood got better for a bit when a few classmates wished a happy birthday, but his face soon drop and drawl out, "Thank you, nice to know someone remembers it."

Their classmate might not understand what it mean, but Kai who is talking to someone else at the moment couldn't help but flinch and mentally applause Yaku for not moving an inch even though he is sitting in front of Kuroo. When he look at the shorter male (don't tell Yaku he say that) Kai sigh when he notice Yaku is snickering behind his book.

Kuroo, unhappy with the lack of response, sulk, leaving the classmate beside him confused.

When the said classmate turn to him in confusion, Kai pretend like he doesn't see the scene.

---

"This better fix his mood." Yamamoto grumble. He's holding balloons on his hands, each colorful but mainly red, he pick the colors himself and state they should have more red since their jersey is red. Classis Yamamoto.

"Kuroo is annoying," Kenma say, "if this doesn't fix his mood, I'm going home alone."

Yaku snicker, "Chill out, Kenma," he raises the cake he's holding to prove his point. Vanilla cake, with too much whipped cream for the sole purpose of throwing it to the captain's face and give it to Lev, "if anything, he'll be going all sentimental to us and start crying."

"Let's hope that's the case."

As if on cue, the doors to the gym bang open.

"Oh, great! Now they're all late!"

From inside the storage room, they could hear Kuroo grumbling. They hear more shuffle and bottles being out on the bench, probably sports drink for practice.

They fall into the position, Lev in the middle, between Yaku and Kai and the rest scatter around them.

"Make sure all of you yell."

"That includes you, Fukunaga."

The said player nodded, but Kai isn't sure he would actually do it.

They tense when they start hearing footsteps coming to the storage.

"Be prepared," Yaku say which Lev nod to.

"--can't believe they don't remember about it and now they're all late, some teammates--"

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!"

Using the decreased version of his arm swing, Lev throw the cake, smiling widely when it struck Kuroo straight on his face. The cheers erupt, Fukunaga even somehow manage to blow plastic trumpet.

Yaku grin, "Did you really think we forgot about it?"

The cake on Kuroo's face falls, but the man isn't moving.

"Kuroo?"

Kai inches closer, hand reaching out to help Kuroo wipe the whipped cream that completely cover his face. His hand stop when he notice Kuroo's shoulders are shaking.

"Are you-- are you crying?" Yaku asks, but his tone indicates it takes everything for him to not laugh.

"Shut up," Kuroo croak out.

"Pfft-- wait, is this for real? Kuroo-san, are you actually crying?"

Kai moves again, this time managed to wipe the cream off Kuroo's eyes and soon the laughter erupts behind him.

Despite being covered by cream, Kuroo's eyes are wet, he blinks face as if that would make Lev, Yamamoto, and Yaku from howling.

"AHAHAHAHAHA THIS IS GREAT!"

"You didn't forget!" Kuroo says, throwing himself to Kai and not so subtly wipe his face to Kai's shoulder. Kai is only glad it means his mood is getting better. A dramatic Kuroo is better than an agitate Kuroo.

"You can blame Yaku for that."

The said male only grin, "Gotta make it count while we're at it."

"That's mean! I thought everyone forget!" He screech.

At the end, Kai is glad Kuroo's mood is fixed. Fukunaga pulls out another cake, not fully drown in whipped cream as that one is for them to enjoy after they manage to calm Kuroo down and that, no, Kuroo, no one hate you, it's just Yaku deciding he wants to make your last birthday here a bit miserable. The practice after that isn't as harsh as the morning practice and despite the fact that both he and Kuroo has to change clothes (again) Kuroo keep smiling through the practice.

"Okay, that's creepy," Yaku says, "I think I like him better when he's upset."

Kai can only smile, feeling sorry for Yamamoto and Lev for the extra practice Kuroo give to them for laughing so hard earlier. Happy moods or not, Kuroo won't let the chance to torture those two slip through his fingers

"Well, at least we make his birthday count."
