You blinked in surprise. Suppressing your pain? Wasn't that like ... something everyone did? "Uhm", you started, "isn't that ... normal? I mean I don't do it on purpose all the time, it's more of ignoring it. Like, when there's a siren blaring in the back, but at some point, you choose to pay no mind to it and it just becomes a numbing hum".
This time it was Tiffany's turn to stare at you. "I don't mean it like that. People, normally, cannot suppress their pain from me. They may be able to suppress it mentally from themselves, but I can always feel the pain to its full extend, because it's not my body. Its like when some one has a fever and the person having the fever barely notices it, but when some one else presses their hand to their forehead, they can feel the heat", she explained, "yet, this time; Y/N, its like you have this weird barrier that's protecting not only you but everything from the extend of the pain. It's obviously a horrendous pain if my eyes turned bloodshot like you said, but I couldn't feel anything".
You scratched your head. "That sounds ... very accurate, but I have no idea what you're talking about", you laughed awkwardly, "because if that's the case, it's really not something I choose to do". Tiffany pursed her lips, before looking down and nodding softly. "You're very strong, y'know", she mumbled quietly, all of a sudden. "What?", you were caught off guard by her random statement. She inhaled deeply.
"You're very brave and strong. I saw it at the pharmacy, and here again. The way you helped Dabi even though you were in a considerably worse condition. The way you had been brave at the pharmacy; you're strong", she mumbled, avoiding your gaze. You were once again surprised by the way Tiffany saw things. "And you're not?", you simply asked.
She looked up at you in surprise, before laughing sadly. She shook her head. "Y/N, I cry a lot. Like so much. There were times when I spent days lying on the floor, sick with drugs, crying", her eyes had taken on a distant glaze, "I'm not strong". You raised an eyebrow at her sharply. "So? You're on the floor crying, and you've been on the floor crying for days", you stared at her, "And y'know what that is? That's you being brave. That's you getting through it the best you know how. No one else can decide what your though looks like". She looked up at you, her eyes glistening with tears. "But ... even if that's the case, I don't think I'm very brave or tough. I'm really insecure and I frankly know that I'm weak. I don't know what it is that you do, I don't know how you can always be brave and seem to believe in yourself. It's as if you bathe in this aura of confidence".
"But can I tell you my secret?", you mumbled. She nodded slowly. "I decided that I'm not going to be the prettiest in the room. Like I know I don't have that face that boys ogle over. I'm not the first face people look for in crowd, and it's not a face that you go home and tell your friends or family about. I'm not the pretty girl. Which is okay with me". You took a deep breath. "So, I've decided, because I don't have the prettiest face or prettiest body, something I can't control, I'm going to have the prettiest soul. I can control how kind my heart is, so I'm going to make it as kind as I possibly can". Tiffany stared at you, speechless. "Now let's go eat something, I'm starving", you mumbled, pulling her up. You saw a smile break out onto her face as you walked through the doorframe.
You had made it to the kitchen, thankfully, but also to your suspicion, having not run into Jason. Was he just keeping up in his room? You decided to push the thought aside, chatting with Tiffany about random topics as you made some toast. "Mmm, I'll be back now. Gotta go to the bathroom", she mumbled, licking some jam off her fingers. You nodded; you own mouth filled with pieces of toast you had snacked in between the making of your toasts.
